Re: What Did This?

Classic perennial target canker, caused by Nectria galligena. The fungi in genus Nectria have been getting some revisions in naming, but you're safe to say "Nectria target canker".

Re: What Did This?

Kevin, has anyone ever seen a fruiting body on nectria? Lacking one, I typically play it safe(r) and just call it target canker. Cronartium sp and others can also cause that pattern, when the rings of callus tissue are successively killed as the infection spreads outward.

re treatment, i try to excise it by using a carving bar on a chainsaw to burnish the infected area with the goal of sanitizing and cauterizing. Jury's still out, but if barriers are not broken, it can do no harm, eh?

if the surface tissues are still hard then barriers may be near surface so caution is needed.

Re: What Did This?

Yes, the coral- to brick-red perthecia of the target-canker Nectria are pretty often found on the bark just to the outside of the target. N. galligena is frequently described from black walnut cankers, I've isolated it from walnut plantations in Missouri.

Sure, just saying "target canker" is probably enough.

Which Cronartium do you mean? I think of C. quercuum on red oaks (mostly), chestnut, .... but I don't think I've seen or heard of it on walnut. Then again, I'm outside of the native range of walnut, so I pretty much see what other people show me!

See you on Monday in Richmond!

Re: What Did This?

ah no I see C fusiforme many times a day so that's the one on my mind. i'm away from the texts right now but if those coral perithecia are distinct round bumps then yes I see them a lot on dead spots on oaks; seem pretty saprophytic at that stage.

Confused as to why they do not show around the old target cankers. Maybe it's the Rogue Red Ale. :~) When are you getting in Monday? Flying I assume? pm if you need ride from airport.

Re: What Did This?

Lacebug ?

and I'm not going into the hosts and treatments cause I'd have to look it up and it seems to slow this thread down too much, imo.

IF it flows into that discussion that's fine.

Interesting thread, hope it lasts. We tried to do one before and it died out after a while.

Re: What Did This?

yup, I'm right so I'm going on, MattyD forgot this thread i think.

Okay, the stuff going on here.

Re: What Did This?

awesome job!

I had sent away a sample cause I wondered if it was somehow chestnut blight.

It came back as Nectria.

Of the top of my head, I'm thought nectria coccineana (not spelled right I'm sure).

but you are probably right.

Yes, this was a pin oak that was brutally topped by some hacker and the whole tree looks like crap and this nectria is everywhere on it.

great job you two!

Re: What Did This?

I would love to post something, but i do not have any of my own pictures they are other peoples.... someone can post, nutin special hit it really i just agreed.

Re: What Did This?

I just looked through my files and i've realized that i don't take enough pictures. I don't really understand how i'm supposed to be able to do all my tasks AND take pictures, transfer them and file them.

Here's one. These were in a group of white birch, not too close to the trunk. Most of the trees were dying back from BBB.

It's likely way too easy but since i never id'd them for sure, i still am just guessing. The caps seem too big for A. mellea.
