Insect & Disease ID Trivia

Re: Insect & Disease ID Trivia

I realize I'm jumping the gun here, but I'm pretty sure cerviarborist nailed it and I found a link with the same pic. Would this be a situation for a BT treatment? Hard to kill lepidoptera on a fruit tree. Product suppliers are always pushing the hard stuff for lepidoptera treatments but what about BT and maybe oils? This is getting into the good stuff that I want to learn more about. Never done a BT spray but really want to learn of where it is practical and effective and for what species? If anyone regulary uses BT sprays in their PHC program, please enlighten me!

Oh ya, thanks for the book advise Guy. I'll start looking online to buy them. Gotta lot to learn!

Re: Insect & Disease ID Trivia

Yup Apple thorn skeletonizer.

We use Bt for it and it is quite effective. We use Bt for any lepidoptera treatment. In Ontario it's widely used for aerial spraying for gypsy moth, spruce and jack pine bud worm. Very effective, cheap and eco friendly. Absolutely it should be used before other pesticides for lepidopterans.

Anyone else see lots of skeletonizer damage? Do you treat for it?

Re: Insect & Disease ID Trivia

I don't have anything in my home collection that destroys or infests trees at this time, so I had to swipe this photograph. This critter can really stop the clock on some valuable plant material.

Bingo PC! AKA palmetto Weevil, AKA Giant Palm Weevil. It has the distinction of being the largest weevil found in North America. Tough critter to work with, as usually, by the time you detect it, it's too late to save the infested palm.

Is there a control for the locust borer?

A clothes hanger or a Q-tip dipped in Lindane and Plumber's putty works pretty good.

Re: Insect & Disease ID Trivia

true pc.. and since you nailed my last offering, a closer look at this one, and you may narrow it down to genus species
