I'm an advocate for child labor!

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

Chainsaws and chippers are two totally different machines and should not be thrown into the same mix. Find me a story where a CHILD accidentally killed themselves with a chainsaw while being supervised by a capable Adult.

@AcTree, I can only imagine what I might learn in the next 10 years, I look forward to those years so much! I appreciate all of your posts. I recognize how most on this post feel and think on this issue, and thats fine, I don't want to come across as trying to change them in any way. To each their own.

Also, "to each their own" is a great motto. Obviously everybody has different opinions and that is great! That's a good thing. The problem comes when "to each their own" can harm or potentially harm others. Then somebody has to step in (usually laws, osha, ansi) but in this case concerned collegues. :)

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

[quote So we are all clear... the QUESTION is: Would you let either one of your children (9-12)feed the chipper or run a saw?

And to the dad of the 9 year old who drove the car down the road, I'm sure you would have taken full responsibility if something were to go wrong, but I have the confidence in your ability to assure that nothing would go awry.

[/ QUOTE ]

Would I let my Children run a chipper - NO

And yes I would have taken responsibility for anything that went wrong - but remember, he was on my lap - I didn't just flip him the keys and say "have fun!"

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

The boys and I chipped brush together for the first time last weekend.
They are learning how to chip from the sides of the infeed. No one is allowed near the chipper unless I am at the controls. They had fun, I had fun. Baby steps, people.

Way to go Jim, baby steps is a good way to put it!

Im soooo glad my dad taught me how to run a saw at a young age, thanks dad!!!..this is why Im so safe out there because I had started at a young age and have a lot of experience under my belt.

I think Bixler said his piece well, it wasnt like he let the kid run the saw and chipper by himself, inches away like Jim did with his kids, hand on the controls.

Ive texed Bixler here and there and sent a job up his way and he did the same for me, sounds like a stand up guy to me...I would be there to help him if he needed it, and I bet he would do the same for me.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

Bixler-If you were a coal miner, would you take a child into the mine? If you were a commercial fisherman, would you take a child on the boat? We work in one of the most hazardous industries. Grown men die every year. Why expose that risk to a child? To make him a man and learn the value of hard work? Not worth it.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

Now though there are definitely differing opinions in this thread, there seems to be a common theme. There are those like myself who believe good work ethic can be achieved via many taxing manual chores which are way more physical and taxing to the body ( hence good work ethic with a bit of physical and mental toughness throw in ). Then there are the others who believe that being able to handle dangerous machinery at an early age is a good thing and make them into hard working adults. That is if they make it to adulthood ( which to be fair is not a GIVEN just by refraining from exposure to such equipment ). I guess things are at a stalemate, however I do urge others who feel the way I do to keep sending a message that allowing children ( minors ) to use chainsaws and chippers is plain negligent, it very well might save some innocent child's life.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

Lets be serious kids still need to live a little. The kids bikes are good to go, this thread is about chainsaws and chippers by the way. Not bicycles, skateboards, surfboards, skis, kites, guns, scuba diving or even elephant chasing or hippo hunting so lets be real dude.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

To be honest the youngster with the little snow plow should have a snow shovel instead, that is REAL work. Makes for strong muscles and a strong mind. ( ADDING THIS AFTER ) I took this too far I draw the line at telling someone how they should raise their kids, my bad.

Or...... It will become better..... because a friend of my cousins sister in-law who knows a guy who heard it at work from a co-worker said he saw an 8 yr old one handing an MS660 with only one tie-in - 75 feet in the air. I said no way - it must have been a 441 because a 660 might be a little heavy for a kid that young.

Lets chalk this one up as freedom of speech, which is good. However this is a serious matter. Chipper+chainsaw+MINORS=Dangerous+irresponsible.
And I see I am not alone on this one by far judging by the previous responses.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

This morning I had a conversation with Levi. I asked him what he thought about the time we used the brush chipper. He smiled and said it was fun. I asked him if he thought the brush chipper was a scary machine. Again he smiled and said yes, REALLY scary.

Fear is a good thing.

I respect your opinion Swingdude.
