I understand what you want but..

Had a home owner sneak up on us once asked if there was anything he could get us before he left... I "GRUFFLY" (is how his wife explained in the email to sales rep) told him nope we needed nothing other then him to get out of our work area.
"The check/payment would be nice"

Bamboo is growing all around a giant oak tree. Lady says, "can't you just grind it out?" I say, "no, it will kill your tree."

"It shouldn't take you too long".

The guy who wants to know every detail about how I will prune his small tree. Then he does the work himself and calls me a few years later for another quote. Not falling for that again.

I wanted really badly to tell the HO today to stay the f@#$ out of our work area. He was just relentless
You need to get a Scotty Olsen attitude with them. He was doing an aerial rescue demo one time and the local fire chief (big city too) walked into his work zone. Scotty went off several times until the dude finally got the message.

No I'm not really. There's three nationalities in my self alone.
Man did you lob us up a softball tho! Hahahahaha

"If topping white pines is so bad, how come that one over there that i had topped several years ago is still alive?"

1. Cuz you pump nitrogen in your lawn to force grass to grown in shade.
2. You calling me a liar?
3. Your talking to me in the wrong tone see? Do it again, next time, I'll bash ya face, with a sawdering iron" (in a Christopher walken voice)

There is a good thread about charging for consulting.

Had a HO on Thursday tell me he would like his silver maple to be pruned to look like an ice cream cone and made 20' smaller. I asked "sugar or dq cone?" Side note; I did exactly what he wanted and he loves it( enough to call my boss and tell him the bucket operator really knows what he's doing.) its not going to take much chipping to remove it when it dies.

:risas: Thanks bro I needed that!

There are some tree-related cultural mythologies. Not much different than the 'Western' fear of tall trees, etc
Now I understand. Always wondered why. A lot of them locally even pave the majority of their yards. At least the urban ones do. Almost like they hate the color green ....

Why is it so expensive? Cause that truck cost 250k, that one 75k chipper 50k. And the gear on that truck totals about 25k. You do the math moron!!

I want the firewood! You moron do you realize the monster pile of 4' diameter oak you are going to have. Oh your craftsman saw can't handle it? Heres the worlds smallest violin.

I understand my tree is dead. It had leaves last year though! BULLSHIT this tree is so stone dead it's broken down to 6 inches already. Oh not to mention the no bark look.

But you are going to make money selling the wood from my tree! Are we looking at the same tree? Do you see the rotted ass poplar before us, or do we need to find you a pair of glasses. I'll leave it right here for you and provide you with someone to look at it and maybe buy it from you! MORONS!

Grrr.

Sent to prune a river birch directly in front of the lady's house. "I want this really, REALLY thin. But I don't want to be able to see the house through it."
Umm, I can already see the house through it.
"But I need it REALLY thinned out."

So, I just gave the tree what it needed (deadwooding, structural prune, etc.).
She came out later and burst into tears.

My SISTER has me come over to look at some trees she wants trimmed. Back yard, no room, and 30'' access down the side of house. Bunch of mature black locust along the fence. Branches almost all the way down to head level. "See what I mean?'' was all she said. Behind the fence is a BUSY 4 lane state route and about 80' tops from the house. I'm thinking, "why would you wanna look at that all day?''
Of course this would be free work. Said I'll be back. This was last August or so. :inocente:

That reminds me of a recent nosy neighbor... I hate the kind that loudly insist that they want their tree to just grow naturally and wouldn't have us work some magic on them.

Trees are designed to grow in forests. This is an unnatural environment we as humans have imposed on them. They can't intelligently modify themselves to better take care of the city around them or the people beneath them... or themselves, for that matter.
The mature white oak she was referring to had an extremely decurrent form and must have had 15 long leaders in various states of disarray... In the woods, it doesn't matter if they break. This is not an ideal site for this tree. There is a 30 foot piece of dead wood hanging over these lines and this street. It is going to reach all over like a hydra until the leverage from those monsterous leads rips them out of their included bark-lined unions causing serious damage to something expensive in this historic neighborhood.
All I told her was that "I could make it last longer if I spent a day playing in it." She kind of scoffed and found her way somewhere else.
I wish trees could pay my wages. I'd never work for a human customer again.

Edit: I'm feeling ranty today. Pardon me.

Frank will remember this one.
Doing a freebie for our lane (5 neighbors) I live on. 4 firs on a Wednesday. Frank wanted to get outa the office and chip some brush so everything had been planned out.
I went out 745 (twp sound ordinance is 7pm - 7am) to start the truck and chipper cause it was cold. At about 8 the neighbor from the development behind us (not part of our lane) came over with sleepies in his eyes saying he didn't get in till late and I woke him up with the truck. And that I need to remember that this is a residential area. I promptly told him I was sorry, advised him of the ordinance and that our lane was zoned for commercial use... and then said you thought that was load wait till we start feeding that chipper wood. He stormed back to his side of the property line and hasn't said two words to me since.
