The Petzl helmet was designed with the holes, and tested with them. MB "installed" them after the fact.

On balance, MB's retro-vented helmet is probably safer than the 'black' Petzl Vertex on the basis that groundies wearing them can be invisible in the undergrowth, where-as at least MB's hat is white and clearly visible.

black would roast your brain here in the summer...maybe ok in the winter. I would buy some carbon gecks before buying a fancy paint job helmet.

Interesting thread.
Modifying helmets, vented, no vented, safety comparisons regarding different colors, and warranty voiding on painting helmets.

I would like to see a crush test done on the vertex and a modified helmet. I bet the results would surprise us.
