Hydration, electrolytes

chiselbit

Been here a while
So this is probably in here already but I didn’t see it in my quick trip through the archives. I’m looking for a drink mix to hydrate and help replenish electrolytes. It’s been stupid hot here on the west coast for awhile and I feel like I can’t drink enough water. What’s a good product? Preferably a powder to mix with water.

Personally, I like Sqwincher. It’s sugar free, and fairly low sodium, so it’s mild enough to not dehydrate you while it’s hydrating.

I tried Liquid IV recently, and while I got an instantaneous boost, a few hours later I felt just plain ill. Can’t guarantee the illness is from the Liquid IV, but the timing was quite suspicious to me.

I know it’s not a powder but I drink Gatorade. You can buy a lower sugar option too I believe, but when you’re burning a lot of calories and sweating the sugar and sodium may actually help you.

Try doing some searching on this site, I buy some of my supplements from them maybe they have something that would fit your needs.

Unfortunately many of the hydration/electrolyte/sports drinks are full of garbage/toxins.. As Chris Schultz suggested I would take a look at Trace Minerals products. Had great success with their stuff over the years.

One day I dealt with very bad heat exhaustion but I kept pushing like the young ego head I was back there.... Next I barfed + hands and forearms locked up bad. I literally thought I was going to pass out and maybe I did but not sure. Either way, 50/50 mix of Powerade and water will work very well in a pinch according to the volunteer firefighter on my crew and it worked ! But I hear pedialyte (spelling) works wonders.

EDIT: I hate powerade and those crap drinks - this was more of a what you could use in a pinch sorta story. I may try this trace minerals stuff.

I like this product from High 5: https://www.wiggle.com/high5-zero-hydration-tablets-20-tabs

About 50 cents per tablet, into 20 ounces of water, and the sleeve is easy to pack in your lunch pail.

Similar ingredients/ratios as your ryno power Hydration Fuel, just a bit more dilute (isotonic) at the 1 tab/20 ounce dose and no gastric emptying issues, even in the last few days heat with long sleeves and face mask doing PHC applications.

Water follows salt.....so indeed electrolytes are really important, and what I learned from sports science in past years, was as you train in hotter temps, your electrolyte drink needs to be more Hypotonic (dilute) so the drink can move quickly from the stomach and into the cells (gastric emptying).

IF the electrolyte mix is too concentrated (Hypertonic) the water from nearby cells actually move into the stomach (water follows salt) and causes more dehydration.

So when/if you folks have any stomach aches after taking in some electrolyte, likely you need to dilute the mix with more water.

The hotter the temps, the more dilute the mix should be. In general.

Lots of "water only" in heat can cause you to lose/flush salts from the body as well and not the best either.

We all have different sweat rates, depending on fitness and adaptation to the heat, so find what works for you, everyone.

Ditto, we got the powder for bottles of water and also the freezie pops at home. The sugar free ones are really good and hit the spot nicely at the end of the day.

One thing I’ll add, this has been part of my AM routine for some time with great results: I take 1/2 a teaspoon of fine ground Himalayan sea salt in a 16oz water twice before I have food or coffee…. At first I was not a fan of the saltiness, but I’ve come to like it, and IT WORKS.

I avoid the sugar free and reduced sugar drinks because they all seem to contain sucralose. Some research (i.e. research that Coca-Cola couldn't squash) indicates it's not good for you. Consumption often correlates with metabolic syndrome. If you want to read more:

Switched to Zevia soda to get my caffeine fix during the day

Dang. 2.25 that’s impressive
It’s not even a chore either…. I got a countertop(I rent where I live)gravity fed charcoal/fluoride filter, the hopper holds 2.25 gallons and I need to replenish it once a day. Staying hydrated with good water (municipal water is poison) is one of the best investments in your health that is so easily attainable.
