Hydration, electrolytes

This topic is a personal pet of mine! I am going to do a talk on it at work soon.

@JD3000 is spot on with the KISS method! I make my own concoction of Lite Salt and magnesium citrate. For magnesium citrate I buy the liquid bottles in the laxative section, they cost a dollar each. I use half a bottle per gallon. That’s really all you need. I also will add lemon juice and unsulferred black strap molasses which has several minerals in it naturally.

I strongly urge that you stay away from any of the common sports drinks and even the heavily marketed “hydration additives” if you are seeking to fully maximize your ability to cope with the heat. That includes the newly popular Liquid IV and Drip Drop like it. It doesn’t matter whether the sugar comes from coconuts or sugar cane, your body processes it the same -don’t fall for the marketing hype. If you do get these supplements, it is actually better for them to use real sugar rather than any artificial sweetener as it is replenishing something your body needs and is using. Look for dextrose/glucose as the main sweetener. Athletes don’t use artificial sweeteners, they need the calories, and neither should industrial athletes.

Trace Minerals posted above actually looks really good! I haven’t before, however it actually looks like a useful product so it might be worth trying.

If you have found something that helps you perform, by all means keep doing what you’re doing, especially if you like it! But if you want to know what is going to fully help you rehydrate, generally stay away from most all of them.

the most important thing is to prehydrate the night before and morning of. Water water water. Another thing I like to do after an especially grueling day is to take a magnesium salt bath. Put two cups of epsom salt in a hot bath and let your skin absorb it. Really helps with cramps and aches.

tomorrow is supposed to be actual temp of 100 degrees with a heat index of 110. It rained to night so we are talking humid Virginia swamp heat. Stay safe out there fellas!
