how to analyze a market from long distance

I am looking to move closer to where I was raised and am looking for ideas on how to analyze the areas I am considering.
I have been keeping an eye on where the local companies are hiring to indicate busier places. Of course also how many companies relative to population and average incomes.
Any ideas on what else I can look at?
Anyone out there with experience at this?

Thanks

Local cultures. Do they value trees. Do they prune them with their tractor bucket. Stuff like that. Better educations should create better tree care. Not always the case though.

Talk to the local ISA chapter or Landscape association. When I was preparing to move to NJ from Toronto, I met Mark through the buzz and then attended the NJISA chapter bbq. I was able to meet many owners and talked with Vince at Northeastern Arborist Supplies. This was invaluable to getting an initial impression of the market.

Remember that 80% of jobs are never advertised so call local companies to learn about the market. Put together a 15 sec blurb about yourself then briefly explain the purpose of your call, market research in advance of moving there. Promise not to take up too much of their time.

It takes a lot of calls to get through to people and find those that are willing to help you. It is worth it though.
