homemade rope guide

I really want to try the rope guide but don't wanna pay the price, also i can't afford it. So i've been looking in to making my own, i've seen plenty of homemade friction savers, but have been having a hard time finding ones more like rope guides. I have found 2 however and am wondering if anyone could let me know how they are made and if they are removable from the ground (sure they are but still can't figure it out.) Ohh and if they can be used with the art double snapper, so when i figure out how its removed i don't have to use 4 lengths of throwline to retrieve it.

here are the only 2 i've found, any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I recently got to try the "real" rope guide, and all I can say is WOW. I practically fell up the rope on my first try it was so effortless.

I have bean hemming and hawing about getting one, but your right, it's alot of $$$.

They are ground retreivable. You would put your rope through the link on the end of the line...a little ball or tiny link goes through the pulley and gets caught in the little link, un girthhitching it.

I made a little pic, you should understand.

Mine is almost the same as the second pictures, with the exception of the large oval ring I used a small clevis of the same type as the actual ropeguide so I can retrieve it from the ground. I have two "real" ropeguides but I use these homemades when I have to retrieve them over hard stuff,ie. concrete, macadam, patios...you know. It hurts my heart to hear $300 some bucks hitting that hard. Not to mention the stress it puts on the metal. You may also try buying the pulley from the ropeguide, they're not that expensive and its setup for the retriever ball. Goodluck!

I've made many a fake rope guide. Always a hair more affordable, but none quite as good. I like that you can adjust the art adjuster just by pulling (hard) on the tail of the rope. You can't do that with a prusik.

I'd recommend you spend the $$ for the newer ART block style pulley.

ha would one or both be from you? I couldn't remember where i found them i just saved the url address. How w as the top one made? what is being used for the pulley?

ill show you what ive been using on the 29th, it works well and you can beat the snot out of it, i have never had the opportunity to climb on a real ropeguide but im guessing what im using is the same, i mean, a pulley is a pulley, and i dont have to worry about mine being recalled and dealing with that headache, but than again, give me a month or two and ill probably pick one up

The top is one that I made.

Aluminum ring (made by ART or CT) spliced to New England Hi Vee. Eye/eye Icetail tied in a Distal hitch. Then add the ART block/pulley. Pictured is the old, original ART pulley. Retrieval link is attached to the end of the 16 strand tail (not shown in photo). One of the drawbacks to this type of RG is that you MUST choke it, or double wrap (round turn). If you try to just sling it over a crotch, the prusik will pull through the ring and create major problems. A solution to this would be to tie the prusik to the rope incorporating a small aluminum ring via Bachmann hitch. But, that's another story...

cool thanks, can you still purchase the old art pulley's? I'm sure they are cheaper than the new ones. Real nice homemade system.
I always footlock and place my FS in so i don't think i'll have to be to concerned about the prussic pulling through, i should always be able to snug it up.

Once again very nice and thanks for letting me borrow your pictures. not that you had a choice

Or if you don't want to choke it and the length doesn't have to be adjustable, convert a ring/ring FS...

This is what I use for my second TIP in the M method.

OK. Something like this?...

I'm just wondering does the small ring prevent the distle from tightening at all?

Seems like it could prevent it from holding.

It holds like normal. Try it out in the backyard first. The hitch shown there is more like a French prusik, I started at the bottom and made all the wraps upward. Then dropped the tail the opposite way through the ring. I think any hitch will work.

Clever solution you came up there TL to solve the problem of the hitch possibly sliding through a friction saver with the bigger rings. This was the problem I encountered when trying to use a friction saver like the homemade ones shown at the beginning of the thread. I also did the same thing with a second ring as a back up just in case it should slide, but I did it in a different way with a different hitch.

Thanks for posting the second pic of that ring to ring friction saver. That add-on to the small ring looks like it will solve the problem for a smoother retrival that I have been looking for with the current friction saver set-up I am using.

speaking of ART RG recall, still no info about mine. I've actually climbed on my recalled RG a couple of times, as no one has found it necessary to send me a new one despite my inquiries for the past 9 months. (maybe the ground is softer in Canada) But not to steal the thread. . I'll start another one. RG is good, but lots of alternatives, especially if you can splice.
