Help! Would love to climb more

Location
Essex, MA
Hi everyone, I love tree climbing and everything revolving around the industry. I'm currently working for a company and climb almost everyday but that's still not enough. So my question is this where can I legally climb? I know that private property is out of the question but what about parks and if so do I need permission and who do I go to?

Thank you

Depends where you are. Generally speaking for parks "in town" you would ask permission from your town or city, whoever is responsible for the the park in your town or city. National parks no-go without permit, national forest or BLM lands mileage varies but generally if you go places where you aren't going to see anybody you won't have any problems. State land varies per state, for example in Massachusetts a permit and liability coverage is required to climb trees on state land.

Reality is if you want to climb you have to find places where you can do it without provoking anyone to call the police or park rangers. Everyone has a cellphone and is eager to use it. My basic rule for climbing is don't climb anywhere where a vehicle can roll up to the tree or that is within easy walking distance of where a vehicle can reach. I don't climb next to or over trails to avoid conflict with woods bicyclists and hikers.

Oh yeah, whenever you're in a tree and a law officer asks you to come down, do so with a smile ;-) Usually you'll end up telling them all about the cool techniques used in roped tree climbing, even if they do say, "no tree climbing allowed here".

Yeah, it tends to draw a disproportionate response, swat team, teargas, mini-tanks, sort of thing that will ruin your day.

Thanks for all the info AJ. I saw that you had posted a video of you doing a white pine climb in eastern ma and that's where I'm located. I was wondering if you would be able to let me know where that is seems like a nice climb. Thanks

Lots of white pine around. Where abouts are you in Mass, I'll take you to one. I don't publicize my climb locations for a variety of reasons.

Awesome. I'm in Boston but I get down that way to climb with Oceans and some of the Providence folks like Banjo. I've got an excellent WP pine location easy for you to get to so we'll figure something out.

Zac, you're right next door to me. We'll have no problem getting a climb set up sometime soon. You can keep an eye out here in the 'recreational' forum, and we'll make sure to let you know of anything coming up!

I am actually planning on competing this year, I went last year to volenteer and really enjoyed it. As for the SRT sounds great I've been interested in getting some on hands experience with SRT, so far everything I've learned about has been read or viewed. Thanks guys.

I was at the kids climb helping there, I was still in Bristol County Agricultural High School at that time. But saw most of the competition.

I'm with JeffL. I bet at least one of us will recognize another once we all meet. Moss and I are scoping some trees...

Zac, I'm the guy who's judged/teched the work climb at the Smith Voc climbing competition the past 3 years. I'm assuming you've taken part in it? Small world, eh?
