I bought the sony 580 res. kit. It looks like a good choice to start with. Then, maybe a new recorder, lanc controller or maybe the wireless kit. I'll let you know how it all works out.

Right now I have a cannon elura 100, mini dv recorder. I may go with a hard drive model in '07, or maybe a digital recorder like Stunt Cams sells.

If I were you, I wouldn't try to only accomidate youtube. I would try for a quality that gives you flexibility for other uses since you never know what you may want to do with the footage. Besides, the helmet cams seem very reasonable- less than $200 for a 580 res.

Remember PAL is 576 res verticle and NTSC is 480, so if Mark is using a 520 on a recorder shooting NTSC he's infront.

But in UK you use PAL.

Hey, imagine when HD comes in, 1080 verticle resolution, gonna be expensive helcams those!

Steve, the hard drive recorder, what format?

My camcorder is maybe 4 years old now, the newer Sony's I see dont get the LANC controller till you are spending big bucks (shame).

Knowing that then perhaps look for a cheaper digicam that runs on mini digitape and has a remote on/off facility and AV in jacks for the helmet cam. There'll be plenty to choose from I bet. At least then you'll be able to shoot decent video for other things besides tree work.

ive already for a digitape camcorder, it doesnt have the av in though unfortunately.

this is the camera that they sell with the recorder. its only 420 lines though. click on the pic for full specs.
the advantages it has though are start stop controller on the cord, and it runs off the recorders battery so no extra battery pack to carry around.

If that's the case then make sure the helmet cam verticle resolution and the recording device match at 480 .

Seems like the quickest cheapest and most functional way out.

It records in mpeg4 format, quicktime stuff. Just make sure any editing program handles it well. I know Ulead claim they do but you get hiccups all the time. I bought a conversion program and change it over to something else!

just had an interesting conversation on the phone with the people at action cam.....apparently the uk police force just before christmas started using the archos recorder/helmetcam combo. they obviously feel its clear enough for gathering video evidence.
