helmet cam

ive got to buy it first!!!! might order 1 monday i really need to call and speak to someone.
and no, my editing is not up to speed. i only have basic editing software and not the time nor patience to spend making things look funky. i can make basic movies like the ones ive posted in the past.

One of the most important features I find is the on/off controller for helmet cam.

The controller I have has a little red/green light. When the camcorders recording it's red, when in standby it's green, when there's 5mins or less tape left it's flashing. So you get some feedback ... see what it has to offer.

Also it has a tiny microphone, which is pretty sensative.

do u start recording from a button on the helmetcam then or do u have to dig round behind u for your camcorder each time u want to stop recording?

ive ordered mine mark.....did you make sure to get a widescreen lens? anything else wont be any good im told. im just waiting for the company i got mine from tog et their delivery of wide angled lenses in the new year.
i might get a new camcorder too, mines a little bigger than some of the newer ones...although i dont want to spend a fortune on something im going to take into the tree either.

The one I bought comes with the wide angle, but can also be changed for close-ups and other types as well. They also sell a remote setup that allows you to leave the recorder on the ground and remote the data from over 300 feet (or something). I'll see about that later. And they have very small digital recorders like this one:

that sounds cool. the one im getting also comes with optional recorder. the guy said it wont record as good a quality as a camcorder though. im thinking about getting one anyway though. i figure for making videos for youtube you're probably not going to see a noticable difference...unless anyone knows otherwise?

Steve.

The LANC contoller on a Sony camera just plugs in and hangs anywhere you attach it, it's a simple on/off button.

When you have 5 mins tape left it flashes.

The Helmet Camera quality will determine how clear the video is first. It doesn't matter whether you wire that into a camcorder or fixed hard drive etc, a good quality helmet camera is first thing you need. It connects to the AV in jacks of the recording device, similar to the VCR at home.

Now the recording device will determine the file size, depending on what format it records. The smaller the resolution for example (352 x 288) vs (720 x 576) etc the smaller the picture and file size, however if you want to view that on a large screen or burn a DVD for TV it will pixelate, blurry like, crap quality.

So make sure the recording medium supports at least the helmet cameras resolution.

Next is what format will the recording medium use to save the file. Example MPEG1, MPEG2 etc. These formats will either compress that data into smaller files giving less clarity or leave them large. Digitape leaves them large at around 1gig for every 4 mins.

For example, my helmet camera can shoot full 580 verticle resolution, the camcorder records at 576 so pretty good, then the saved file is large MPEG2 format. I can then burn a DVD for TV use as well and it's clear as a whistle, dont blow that opportunity by reducing resolution and files size and ending up with low quality DVD's.

My 0.02 from experience.

ok thats just confused me even more, i thought id decided what i was getting.
the lanc does sound cool but that would mean buying a new camcorder with the lanc socket and they are more than i was looking to spend at the moment.

this camera here has the switch on the cable but its only 420 lines and specially for the 30gb media recorder, so im not sure how good that one will be either.
obviously the more i spend the better i'll get and im sure just for youtube videos the cheaper one will probably be fine.
im gonna keep looking i guess for a few days.
thanks for your input

ekka, what did you pay for your lanc camcorder? i looked at some today and the cheapest started at £800. cant justify that at the moment.
