Hi Guy, hard to believe you're new to this forum but if so , welcome, welcome!! I saw you speak on this topic in MN 2003(?) There shouldn't be much blood spilled over this. As I recall you had said that heading cuts might be acceptable on severely storm damaged trees as opposed to removing the tree entirely. Makes sense to me. A tree that's been hit hard can either be removed and replaced(logical), or the breaks cleaned up with strategic heading cuts and let it try to come back with careful monitoring then eventually crown restoration pruning techniques. The decision would be based on many factors- the tree itself, potential hazards, amount of damage, mindset of the treeowner, mindset of the arborist, etc. Am I close here? I'll try to drop in on your discussion in Nashville, I'm very interested to see where your research has taken you (and us).
