Habitat tree

Removed an elm for a client today that was in an old fence row between 2 houses...tried to convinced them to let me leave a 12-15' stub for the woodpeckers (they probably have 10 various bird feeder and houses back there). No go.

It is great to leave those when we can!

I catch Hell for cutting down dead near paths but like to leave a bit for habitat as well. Ones in the deep woods can stand til they fall as far as we're concerned.

That's what they're told repeatedly. Don't seem to get that there's plenty of other dead habitat trees everywhere

Here, the Federal Government has stopped covering employee's butts for jobs assigned to them, I'm told by a former US Forest Service retiree, in discussion of liability over having been assigned to build a 'log ride' on a downed tree on a mountain biking trail.

I wouldn't have thought it was a concern, being a trail feature, designed on an heavily engineered and built trail.

I can't imagine who thought that wouldn't be a liability, seeing those huge apartment buildings (guessing) in the back.

I'm all for habitat trees in reasonable places!

Just had my first one fall in the last year. 30' tall and vertical. 10 years from 'snagged out' to failure.
