Hey guys,

Just a quick post as I commute to my day job because I'm really buzzed (no pun intended).

Back in May at a regional TCC I was the fortunate winner of the big Husqvarna chainsaw spottie prize. I rec climb and didn't own a chainsaw so was pretty stoked to have a saw myself. It's a lot different to a handsaw and was a big deal for me. The win drew some good laughs as most knew I only climb and was certain to be the only person to never started a saw. People have given me their business cards only to learn I started a mean line trimmer. Lol

So after practice on the ground, lots and lots of self directed learning, side study on small motors, and building a saw buck for clean up of a tree I long ago had felled, I returned home from a trip last week to find storm damage to a tree in my front yard. I know this tree well as I started combing there.

So, with the learnings and skills I've developed, I did my first tree work at height with a chainsaw. Lots I could do better, but the task was completed safe and was relatively successful.

I know I could do better, but I'm really stoked. I just wanted to share that - the excitement of a first time has me buzzing. I read threads here of early career arborists and sense their excitement and I can really relate.

So, no plans for a side career in arb and I don't have any distance education options here for arb study (would if I could), but I'll keep on with my rec climbing/TCC passion and see how I progress.

Love it, I am also a rec climber. I have done a lot of saw work on the ground both felling and firewood, but have not ventured to haul one up a tree with me yet. Glad you had a good experience, I have been eyeballing rigging rings and speed line gear and will probably give it a whirl next year sometime. I have a few acres of woods I am maintaining. Thanks for sharing!

I will never forget the first time I used a saw in the air, dangling from a little nylon rope, terrified and excited at the same time. You never forget your first! Cheers brother.

All good, lol @oldoakman Thanks guys. Will continue on my journey.

@JeffGu i was working by the road, some small children may not have made it home.

Moving soon so lots of new trees to explore, though all low height native bush at my new home. Just a small walk are some redwoods.

Thanks Muggs. I must say I really appreciate the Gilman vids from UoF that you've posted.

I've been working my my through them. They are a great resource.

I am always looking at tree structure now. The tree that was damaged from this post though really confuses me. I haven't been able to identify it. It grows really really wide, but not tall and has no apparent lead. Thankfully, it's just below some phone/fibre cables along my street boundary. Anyway, I'll be leaving this home soon so I won't fret.

I'll never forget the first time I had the 660 in the tree with me, just getting it started was terrifying. Trying to get a 32in bar accurately in to a cut was a whole nother story.
Always double check your work positioning, vectors of your lines and most importantly, be aware of where that bar is going when it falls out of the cut.
I always love hearing about the advancement of someone's arb world.
Climb safe, cut safe my friends.
