DYI throw rope auto rewind

Location

After dealing with 30 feet of loose throw line while climbing for too long I started bringing a little pouch with me to cram my line into. that still, was a headache. After looking around around I noticed people are using old fly fishing auto rewind reels to manage their throw line. After finding them on ebay, I see they are going for $30+ after shipping. Being a cheapskate, I thought I could make one cheaper. Off to harbor freight I go to buy a 24 dog leash for $4.50. It's a simple mod, just unscrew the thing, replace the nylon cord with throw line. I was able to get 32 feet of throw line in it after adding a few additional wraps. I'm going to hit it with the belt sander tomorrow to clean up the edges. I though you may get a chuckle out of it.

Pretty clever, I like it!

I’m thinking of the short length though... 30’ of throw line = only a 15’ throw to get it back to you, right? Distance like that, ain’t it easier to just throw a few coils of rope or the rope with a steel biner or snap?

Just wondering. Don’t let me talk you out of it if it’s working good for you :)

What’s the skinniest throw line available? Skinny could allow more length to fit in it. One of those that could hold 60’+ would be very useful to me at times.
