Double braid ring-N-ring

Jman, don't worry about it. Get yourself some yalex/tenex. Maybe like 20' of 3/8" We'll get you started with a simple eye sling, then you can grow from there. All the tools you need are either at your house or a nearby store. You don't need to have fids yet, but you'll soon have to learn how they work as measuring unit. For starters, 1 fid = rope diameter x 21.

From my research fid are the metal hollow tubes you use to help push the strands of rope though the core to splice it. What rope types use fids, if my deffinition is correct and what should i look into getting? I'm a pretty fast learner with anything that has to do with my hands so it should be too long before im getting into 12 strand and 16. i really want to work on double braid like blaze and PI.

You can and do all those ropes without fids. Most people find it easier without aluminum push fids. People tend to prefer the pull type fids like the Toss Wand or the classic bent coat hanger.

...or .050" piano wire attached to a dowel, skinnier, stronger, more... I dunno... splicier.

I rememebered seeing one of the fids before but could someone post a picture or two for me so i can hit the store up. What sizes do you use?

Nice series of photos and a very neat splice. Velocity is the hardest rope I've spliced, because that final bury takes some real work.

Sorry... that is a climbing line. I would not make a friction saver out of double braid, for the reasons discussed earlier. Just wanted to show some splicing in action.
