DMM throw hook.

@FreeFallin; One of the reviewers on the site said he can fit 60 feet of Tachyon rope in this bag. I don't know if that helps or not.

Yes it does, I didn't realize this was the same bag, and I can't beat that price sewing my own.

I still think I'm going to make my own smallish mag bag to get my lanyard under control this week.

Here are some simple refinements done to my stock DMM Hook line...

The squared end on the stitched eye was snagging on me and getting fluffed up from wear. I trimmed it to an angle with a hot knife (not much room to work) and shrink tubed it to prevent future wear:

Punched a hole through with a hot nail and installed the DMM XSRE biner on the end to attach the tail inside the DMM 6 liter storage bag:

Key element for a bag is calculate your desired rope length to fit with enough room left to fit the Hook in on top. It's nice to be able to stow the entire thing while you're climbing, keeps it more out of the way when not in use.

I tapered two of my sewn splices by carving little wedges out of some soft rubber about 3/8 inch thick, then shrink-wrapped over the whole splice with the wedges up against the square end of the line. The wedges were longer than wide and made a slender taper but it did add about an inch to the length of the splice. Not sure that matters except if it was passing over too small a diameter limb and one wants to avoid that anyway. Still haven't gotten to use my hook much but the rains are slacking off now with some intermittent sunny days. Spring is coming!

I would say Spring is coming early this year. At least a 50% chance [emoji38]!

Here is my current hook set up. I keep the whole system stored and ready to use. There is roughly 40' of safari and it all fits with room to spare in this easy rigger bag. After reading this thread and seeing a lot of you use the cinch I'm wondering if it it's a huge improvement worth investing in? Or any other ways I can modify the system to improve it.

OMGoodness....:). If you get around anyone who has a Hook with just a cleanly spliced 10mm rope on the hook (like the "kit" was sold) try it for ten throws and retrieves. It's uncanny what the Hook can go out and grab for you and how well you can get back a screwed up throw with the flick of rope etc.

I could be wrong but it looks like that connection set up will work against your primary intentions for shots twenty to fifty feet away from you.

And with a solid primary anchor point in a safe place I can ascend the 10mm easily enough and capture progress with a Cinch.

Do you mean with the petzl sling between the rope and hook?

Yes, and a biner.
I originally had the rope tied directly to the hook and found that to be to cumbersome to navigate tight crotches. I was thinking with the sling I could quickly put it on the end of my rope or lanyard and have some space between the knot and the hook. While it makes setting the hook really easy I lose almost all ability to roll the rope and maneuver the hook as needed. Retrieving it can be difficult in smaller crotches. I'm gonna keep my eye out for some of the rope from the kit and continue making it a better system. Even tho it's crude it does work well

The Trango Cinch works perfectly with the 10mm Sirius Reep Schnur that comes with the Captain. It does not work as smoothly on lines larger than 10mm. I tried a Gri-Gri 2 with that combination and it was terrible! It would release when not under load but would also not re-engage on its own without help.
I have my Reep tied to the Hook with a knot and it has not interfered in its use in any way that I can tell. As mentioned, your setup will work, just not as well is it is capable of.

I have swapped the biner for a quickie. My only hesitation here is that the pin sticking out could cause damage when being whipped around. I'm going to order some reep schnur as soon as I find some in stock. I will end up going directly to the hook with a splice I think.
