DMM throw hook.

Thanks Huskyman, I'm gonna go with lead or steel balls in the front neck, this will also make the hook nose heavy, which I'm thinking is a real good thing.

It's quite heavy enough as shipped and behaves perfectly. If you were using it for a heavier/wider diameter line I can see adding weight if you first tested and found it wasn't heavy enough.

Looks as if the weight in the end can be removed and replaced with a heavier one, but no sign of a heavier one for sale. Maybe you could fill it with sand, but I think the weight needs to be concentrated at the end to get it to self-right.

The self-righting feature has more to do with the profile of the hook. Very cleverly designed, if you pull fast it doesn't hook the branch, if you pull slow it does. Because of that design it's very retrievable.

Can you specifically remember which rope this was Tim?

Cinch was designed for single rope use, it's the only way to use it. It's pretty much perfect on the hook. I wouldn't use it as a standalone vertical ascent or descent system with the hook, not what the hook is designed for. You could use a Grigri II as well except the Cinch is a little lighter and more compact.

Did you have any issues with the throw rope hocking at all? I'm curious if the new swivels that TS

Sirius 10mm is very supple so hockling could be a problem theoretically but I've had no issues with hockling over 3 days of use. I think the suppleness enhances the functionality of the hook, DMM thought of everything.

At this point I'm not seeing a need for a swivel on the hook end, the rope eye and shackle combined counter any weird loading. Again since you'd be using it as a secondary hold/shared load, it's very solidly built but not intended for taking tremendous load.

My only hesitation with the trango cinch is that it doesn't work with your foot ascender (which is awesome for tree transfers with the hook, in my experience).

I guess you could always add a hand ascender/revolver to the mix though. Good thinking Moss.

I'm interested in what you find. Anything to make it easier in the tree. Just don't wanna carry an extra bag o rope around.
I think it's heavy enough to do it, I would try it (with something besides the BB since I don't have it) except the lock nut that holds the shackle is "single use only", need to get the spec on that nut so l can try some different setups for the hook.

Why would you take the nut off anyway?

....You could use a Grigri II as well except the Cinch is a little lighter and more compact.

I just picked up the hook kit from TS. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but I have no doubt it will work well. I have the Cinch on my lanyard that I use in single line mode sometimes and find that it is not that smooth when fully weighed. Thought I would see how the Grigri II works with the Sirius.

I'm pretty sure a swivel would be a bad idea as it would take away being able to alter the hooks orientation by twisting the rope while it is hanging over a limb.

Some really good info and questions coming for is thread... Thanks guys. @moss thanks for the locknut info, first I've heard of his.

I'm interested in how the nose weight can be changed and now also interested in why/how the locknut on the shackle is single use. Perhaps there's a pre-applied lock-tight or some torque correct means to make it work correctly each time. I can see the sense in this for safe use.

If locknut spares/replacements are needed I think I'd want a small bag of a few as an orderable. I wonder if 3 should come stock? I believe the single use locknut info should be in the product descriptions, but I haven't seen it.

...looks like moss has posted more about the nose weight while I've had a bite to eat.

Here's great hook vid from @colemanjessenz that hasn't been posted in a while

I'm sold! The order goes in on Monday morning! Seeing how I'm a total Gear Junkie! I thought the Epple was a great way to go, but the Captain is definitely the best way to go! Thanks Moss & Steve for all of the insight and pertinent information. Another big item to have on the Saddle, yikes!

Hey, 123Craig! I can't be absolutely precise at this time, but I can tell you that it was a Mamut rope that I think has since been discontinued.

I get my chops busted every time I mention this rope. It was the first rope I ever bought, and I was just looking at specifications in deciding what to buy. This rope was dynamic, and rated for at least 10 full falls before needing to be retired. I guess it would be referred to as a mountaineering rope. It was I think referred to as a "dry" rope, if I recall correctly, which I believe means that because of the way it's made, it will dry out more quickly, and is therefore less likely to be damaged by mildew, if that's possible.

The stretchyness of the rope does not bother me, and the fact that the rope absorbs shock loads I think means I'm less likely to be injured in a fall, or to have a tie-in point break out.

But it is skinny, and many who comment on it do not like that fact. After all of my reading on the Buzz, my future rope purchases will be more conventional. I try to be trainable, and I can't knock all of the experience of the veteran climbers of this forum.

Also, the link I tried to leave for the Cinch manual does not appear to work on my handheld computer. I think if you just do a "Bing" search on "Trango Cinch user manual", the link to the PDF should appear near the top of the list.

Well, just filled my wish list and since I've got 120' of 11mm tachyon & a DMM rope bag, I'm gonna get just the Hook. It'll be all inclusive w/extra rope, never know if you may need it, if not, I can always shorten it! I seriously doubt that I will, but ya Neva kno!

The Trango Cinch can be found and purchased on Amazon.com for $86, if you're having trouble finding one, I just checked and it's an Amazon Prime item, so you can get it by Monday if you need it that fast. I'm a Prime customer and can have it shipped as a gift anywhere in the US. I'm not 100% sure about Canada!

I found (1) Blue, (1) Green, & (3) Red, I just wanted to make sure that anyone that couldn't find them had another option. I'd rather go w/TS, but if not in stock, there's another option. Thanks Tim. What do you think, are you going to get the Hook, or hold out?

@Dave Rohach, I'd buy it in a second if my situation were different, but for now, any gear purchases are on the back burner.

The hook looks like a beautifully made and really well thought out piece of gear, and it is definitely on my wish list.
