DMM throw hook.

I hear ya Brother! I've been putting it off since the kit came out and I hesitate buying from some of the other gear suppliers. TS has been the best for me, especially since I get my orders in less then 20 hours! Can't beat that with a sharp stick in the eye!

Yea Merle, after reading that post it made a lot of sense, my biggest concern is having the rope hocking, but if you let the hook hang from a decent height it should self correct itself, I would assume. But we all know what happens when we Ass U Me... I do think an 11mm rope would be a lot more versatile on mechanical devices. In My Honest Opinion. Glad to see you got in on the discussion, though. Moss had some really great input about it. That's really helpful, in making the plunge!

Yes Sir, the biggest concern that I read was that the shackle nut is a one time only use. I'm curious if another nut can be purchased, that's a question for the crew @TS, I guess.

My only hesitation with the trango cinch is that it doesn't work with your foot ascender (which is awesome for tree transfers with the hook, in my experience

Yeah I often use a foot ascender for transfers or on my lanyard. So far I've done some pretty shallow rope angle horizontal movement with the Cinch just using the tried and true one hand pulling towards me above the Cinch and the other hand pulling the tail away from me and no problem advancing. It's always easier doing that in a traverse than it is straight up vertical ascent.

I agree Moss, I really like the idea of moving laterally while getting some ascent at the same time. The SAKA, versus the CT FA keeps me from having to get into a yoga position! Just lift my foot and disconnect. Easy Peasy...

After watching the original video on this forum, I would think that it could be used for lateral or diagonal movement as long as it's not being used as a primary ascent. Otherwise, why would it be needed at all? But I digress to someone that has actually used it in the workplace. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@moss ; would you say that the hook should be used only horizontally? I'm thinking it could be used to advance to a higher TIP, but maybe that's a bad idea?

You could progress higher with it but there are already great ways to do that. DMM doesn't want you hanging on the hook without sharing load with a primary anchor. Not defending DMM but just stating what their recommended use is in the hook safety literature.

I wonder if Paul Cox can make a sidewinder capable of holding 15 meters of rope? It seems like it would be a nice combination.

Definitely, I was imagining making my own auto retrieve reel but that's as far as I'll go with it. I don't even like using an auto retrieve reel with the throw line I keep flaked in a small bag on my harness. It's very quick to put away by flaking a bunch into my hand then stuffing into the bag, same with the hook line.

I thought about buying some sterling 6mm power cord running a ddrt setup through the shackle ..simple ring or pulley captured under a good hitch for advancing. Thoughts?

With doubled rope on the hook I think you're going to increase the chance of hanging it up on something. Single rope is much better for escaping snags when you're pulling back over a branch when you don't like your throw. As far as I can tell you want as clean and simple a setup as possible, single rope with spliced or sewn eye on to the hook shackle is probably best.

Felt like a hair brained idea anyways.. I kinda figured as much. Could always put a little three to one for easier advancement if needed. I have some 6mm ocean prusik and a pinto that should be a good combo on the Sirius. My issues are two and they're lame. I'm not paying for the kit.. I don't spice( so lame I'll find the time someday) so I'm reaching for ideas whereas at the shackle I don't need a knot.. Maybe I'll get into sewing my own eyes and piss someone off .. (y)

The kit is actual pretty well thought out. I keep a CT roll-n-lock on my harness. With a carabiner and micro pulley it makes great 3:1 that is very efficient and compact.

You could get a price on having an eye sewn on whatever cordage you want to use, you'll still come out paying much less than the entire kit.
