DMM throw hook.

I wish in these photos that you could see the Captain, or the Akimbo but at least you can see my newish MCRS. Loving the all three, but for me the 40 plus feet hardly gets used. Might eventually shorten it to about 25ft. Here is me anyway, lol.

I couldn't make that dysfunctional throw again if I tried. I missed the crotch to the right, it went left of the trunk and somehow wrapped around to grab a different crotch on the back of the tree. A one in a billion shot.

Looking at Moss' pic, I thought you were playing horseshoes at height. Haha

My hook has had a few moments it's done strange stuff and I stare wondering how that happened. Rec climbing affords many moments to just laugh and try again. All part of the enjoyment of climbing for me. Haven't got it stuck or had any problems and still happy with the investment.

From recent posts I want mess around with my hitch in some more loaded SRT scenarios. It goes really well even though it's 10mm armor prus to 10mm Sirius with a vt/xt (not sure which, I'd have to look). The way the armor prus flattens and its suppleness makes for a good combo.

Still curious about trying the Epple out...

I suppose I could use some sort of shackle (like this - http://www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?category_id=181&item=3446) if I wanted an alternative to a biner attachment (to be able to snug ascender closer to the hook).

I still have slight reservations about how strong the Epple may be with full weight (and more) on it - anyone care to comment?

I've no problems with putting my full weight (and more) on the Captain.

So I was a rec climbing this past Saturday late afternoon after a earlier climb with a son. Sun was setting beach side on an already overcast and rainy day.

I was finish up my climb with a quick traverse on a spending puhutakawa. First two throws were low, last good, maybe a little high.

One guess where this is leading....

Got the bast3rd captain stuck. Ain't leaving this thing till tomorrow to retrieve. Mission on.

Sun set, really dark, still drizzling, can barely see throwline, though I know I've hit a good strong union by the trunk on a branch at least 20cm. Gear is getting a mess on with wet sand sticking to everything.

Descended, reset a new TIP below the hook. No light. Called in my son to cycle from home with a 700 lumen trail running light. Now I could light this tree up like a New Years fireworks.

Ascended, advanced, found the bugger wedged on the spine just next to the shackle between Y shaped branches where the tops of the 'Y' where parallel and perfectly sized to the captain's spline. Darn thing wouldn't budge. What fruit'n luck. Anyway, a short limbwalk and deadwood made it easy to lasso the hook and retrieve.

And so the consensus....

Rescues and adventure rock, love the captain, it has a place on my saddle as appropriate. And this climb... well I just got unlucky, but loved every minute.

DMM Captain... making history traverse by traverse.

@WaitakKauri, I think that a stiffer type cord and rope work best when using a hitch only system in SRT mode. To use @TheTreeSpyder's "footprint" to describe how the cord makes contact with the rope, instead of a clown's size shoe you want more of a ballarina slipper effect. Just the toes touching.

Sounds rope logical. The armor prus does flatten out. I have some beeline 10 and 8m to try.

I found beeline to be worse than the HRC. The braid on the cover is too loose, I think it bunches up between the cord and rope causing more surface area and friction.

I think the armor prus works better than the HRC, sorry I got the two threads mixed up. Do you find that you are doing a lot of descending on the hook rope? I find that I mostly just ascend and use a simple descender if I need to go down.

A simple on/off RADS setup covers ascent and descent when you have to go beyond what you can achieve simply pulling rope through a hitch or device (like a Cinch).

Normally I don't descend much on the hook . If the hitch is locked up, I just attach my foot ascender (there and ready) to unweight and then no prob.

I'll play more with hitches. If I was a pro climber or less budget focused I'd be looking at the tango.
