Dead "Wolf" Pine Tree

Re: Dead \"Wolf\" Pine Tree

Thanks for posting this one! It's clear that you would not have just walked up to this one and climbed it. I like your approach in the inspection and taking it one step at a time. I also really appreciated the pictures to demonstrate the techniques used. Thanks again... and glad to see it all went well...

Nice work chris!
Those trees will defiantly keep you on your toes. I did a similarly sketchy tree two weeks ago I’ll try to post pics when I get them from the home owner.
Awesome job

Re: Dead \"Wolf\" Pine Tree

Thanks guys. Those dead Pines can really be sketchy, but having taken the proper steps before just climbing it, made all the difference. IMO

Re: Dead \"Wolf\" Pine Tree

Nice job for sure. I like your thought process.

What are the ends on your straps? They are available in hooks, chains and flat hooks. When I use ratchet straps I never use the flat ones. I think they could come undone,

Re: Dead \"Wolf\" Pine Tree

With all due respect Chris that tree looked way too dead to even think about climbing it.Even with your pre climb checks i find it hard to fathom having the gnads to go up and wreck it.Glad you are still here and best of luck with your arm rehab.

Re: Dead \"Wolf\" Pine Tree

Mark, the ratchet straps that I use are the flat 10,000 lb load binder straps. I modified them by removing the hook on the ratcheting mechanism, so that only the hook from the strap can connect to the ratchet by itself. I don’t have to worry about trying to have the two hooks connect together, because like you mentioned, they are more likely to come undone. Once those things are tightened up now, they aren’t coming undone unless you want them to.

ArborCut, thanks for wishing me good luck on the arm rehab. It’s coming along nicely. I know by the pictures that the tree looked like a death trap, but believe me I took every precaution to mitigate the hazards as I went along. I was well aware of the risks, but was able to justify them by the steps that I took. Like I said earlier, there’s no way that I would have climbed that tree years ago, but I knew that I could now. Still, I would have definitely felt better if I would have had another tree adjacent to the dead Pine, in which I could have set an AFC backup.
