Components of a Self-Advancing Knee Ascender (SAKA)

Hey Steve, I told you that you'd love the SAKA, especially after you got it dialed in! It's such an energy saver. I'm curious about the washers that you and Richard (yoyoman) were talking about. I purchased mine directly from Richard so I didn't have any washers on mine. Could you take a picture of them and post it or PM me what they look like? Thanks, Buddy...

Perfect, I'll stop by the hardware store in the morning and pick up several of them, on my way out of town, I'm heading north for the weekend to get some camping and climbing in while the weather is so nice! Thanks for the quick response, YoYoman! I can't say enough positive replies when fellow climbers ask about the SAKA! As I'm sure you've noticed. I need to get some quality time with the Surveyors newest BDB, I've tried it out in the back yard but I want to get proficient with it for the TS ArbTrek in Nov. are you going to be there or do you have more exciting things going on?

The original video shows "not available" when i tried to play it. I'd love to make one, is that still possible? A material list, where to purchase, and basic rundown of steps? I checked youtube but maybe i'm missing it...

I know TreeStuff has them but...

Sounds like an awesome project for the winter months. I'd probably want to build a couple!

Definitely, one of quite a few, best investments I've made over the years. Thanks, Richard, I love my SAKA. Although, Climber429, you could build a HAAS, they're not quite as efficient but a rather simple build. I would definitely not attempt to build a SAKA, there are far too many critical components and labor in assembling one that would be trustworthy and last as long as they do. IMHO. If you can splice Tenex, you can build a HAAS. Brummel & footloop, are the simplest to complete. Best of Luck.

I will definitely look into that! Tenex if the easiest to splice right? Met with a somewhat local climber last summer and he showed me (what i believe was tenex 1/2" or 5/8") that he spliced into a basal anchor for his homeade welded up porta-wrap.. At least thats what i thought he said it was. Pretty thick, orange cordage that looked like it could possibly be coreless. But i'm new to alot of different ropes, i've read alot but reading doesnt really give you the feel of all the different characteristics of varietions of ropes/cordage. I'm down to attempt to build anything really. I've got other parts & hardware on the way to me to see what i can improve on, i try to think outside the box and like customizing things although my batman "apta like" beltbuckle/cable firing grapple hook hasn't been completed yet but i'm gettin there. :risas:

Guys like YoYo inspire me to be creative when it comes to gear.

I'll dig into the haas for sure!

Thanks bud!

Yea James, 3/8" Tenex blue is more than strong enough, plus a 6-8" piece of nylon tubular webbing for the footloop. Either a CT or Kong chest ascender, and a couple feet of dyneema Shock cord, with a swivel leash snap. The rest is labor. The flatter ascender is key, so as not to create a friction point with your climbing rope on Ascension. Just take a really close look at an assembled one to understand the necessary steps that you'll need to assemble one. Also, ask questions, when in doubt. [emoji30]

The Saka is really not that complicated, no offense to Richard at all. Thanks to his vid way back when I built my own, and it is still going strong. If you really want a Saka just buy one or give making one a go. The most that happens is your not happy with it and you try again. Remember that neither the Saka or the Haas is life support. It needs to strong and durable but it is not life support. Now saying all that if mine broke tomorrow I would be ordering Richards only because he has a sewing machine and I had to hand stitch mine.

I assume both the Haas & SAKA can use the same chest ascender? That would make building both pretty interesting, that way i can give both a try using the same ascender. Would be a win win i'd think. And if i get both working correctly, just order another ascender and i'm there!

Thanks guys!
