Compact Bulldog Bone

Does anyone know how the bone performs on 10.5mm static. I am wondering because I use srt for my bow hunting setup. Thanks
It works great on 11.1 mm km3 max with about half of the adjustment left. I weigh about 175lbs without gear. I think it has a lot to do with rope construction. Km3 max is pretty hard and tight, especially after its been packed down by the bone running over it. I've never tried it on anything smaller.

Just received my Stubby bone today, my old bone gave me three years of hard graft, looking forward to bedding the new one in tomorrow. Thanks a bunch Gordon, it looks great.

Mike

Was there anything wrong with your old bone (no pun intended)? - Could you have just ordered replacement parts in that case?

Did you just want to try the stubby? - Can you give us an update on what you think of it?

Thanks

I got a pack of the dmm grommets surveyor mentioned a page or two ago. They fit like a glove and work great. I'm using a dmm aero biner on the bdb and I had to use a little lube to get the biner through the grommet and rotated around to the small end. Now that the lube has dried up, it WILL NOT come off of the small end of the biner. I imagin it would if I relubed it. So, it does what it is supposed to do.

Hi my first post here, I've been lurking for some time. Great devices and forum! I've got the compact adjustable bdb and latest bola. I'm wondering with the bola has anyone tried a slack tending pulley? My main intention would be to set up a 3 to one mechanical advantage with an ascender and dmm roller biner on my bridge with single or doubled rope. I also would like to use the bola on the hip d's and would like easy one hand adjustment with a lil weight on it. I'm fairly new to this but finding ways I like to climb without spikes (srt mostly).

Welcome ,
I'm not sure if it's been made to light that the bola isn't designed for single line far as i know, but I know Gordon is very thorough and I'm hoping he can corre ct me if I'm wrong.. anyway, just figured I'd throw in my 2cents .. the way your intending to use it doesn't specifically read like your going to straight up single line climb it with bola but I'm thinking (hoping) your planning to use the compact bdb in that fashion.. I don't own bola nor have I tried it.. but I'm a tried and true cbdb ambassador indeed and I believe it's the most robust and user friendly multicender available still!.. I believe it's been since 2014, Its been around , wow time flies??? Evolving and getting even better along the way.. Good choice, welcome to the dog house OR boner den or whatever the ..we were calling ourselves when the eruption of jubilation was going upon after this beasts release in the neighbor hood marking up trees and a few fire hydrants all over the world..hoow hoowwwhoooowwwwwlllll...
Have you much experience with other tools and devices for ropework ? Do you climb for work or recreationally Or both?

@TimBr Thanks for the welcome! I'll wait and see.
@Treetopflyer yes the bone would be for my main srt line and the bola as positioning. I'd like to use the bola in either doubled or srt with 3 to 1 to advance my bdb tip or move around the tree. My tip is usually at a major intersection and usually need to get a bit higher. Having trouble passing the intersection with a smooth bit of trunk above.
I have minimal experience probably removed about 40 trees using spikes and a hh2 single rope. I do it for work being a general contractor I can save a good bit of money when the need arises. I also love the adrenaline rush and being part of a rare breed. I was always intrigued watching crews drop trees like nothing. Here on long island all I've ever seen is spikes and double rope split tail. I'm really trying to resist the spikes and doing mainly removals sometimes with heavy vines.
I feel I've hijacked the thread a bit and want to give thanks to surveyor and all the hard work and testing. It's impressive to see the passion and continued improvements. I hope to learn the possibilities and limits of these devices.

The BOLA, in my opinion is more diverse than it was designed to be. I have had good luck with it single and double line with some modifications. I have done a lot of low and slow and am transitioning to higher work with it. Search for Daigentanoen on youtube and you will see where I got my inspiration. It takes a bit of modification to get it to do what you see, but it is working great for me. I have it working quite well DRT and I am confident descending in SRT with it. I'm not sure Gordon's feelings about it being used these ways, but I really like it's versatility. I am using it on KM3.

The BOLA was, in my mind, an exercise in making the most compact rope grab I could, that could also be released by the user under load. As far as a three to one setup goes, I have had some success with it that way without a pulley below, while I see others have not. Since the BOLA rotates at the attachment point, it creates a sort of pulley effect upon tending. Has anyone tried capturing a small pulley at the bottom of the biner that attaches to the teardrop? Or how about using the BOLA with a Rope Wrench above?

And I'd say you nailed it plus some. I'll have to play with the Rope Wrench idea, I don't think I've tried that yet.

Keep up the great work, can't wait to see what's next.

The BOLA can be used on a single leg of your lanyard without the working end returning to the climber. That is, I use the DMM captain hook on the secondary side of my lanyard and can traverse to another lead in the tree using the Bulldog style BOLA (the one with the rubber nubs) as the rope grab. I have also used it on the primary end of my lanyard with a traditional snap hook termination and can use my lanyard in a hip to hip configuration or move it to my bridge and single line it. The BOLA holds and releases under load while in double or single configurations which is why I love it! I am not 100% sure I am answering your questions, but I feel it does't need a tending pulley. The BOLA has always tended really well with how Gordon made it. I have't used it in a 3 to 1 like you are describing, but I guess the pulley might be more necessary in that situation.

I am a huge fan of the BOLA and the CBDB and have used both every day since I got them!

@John_KAYS
These are all great possibilities some of which I'll surely try.
To be clear I'm concluding that you can not use it for single rope without another proper main attachment even if only to advance main line quickly. I believe even the latest top dollar certified adjusters do not recommend this even though they passed testing for it.
I'm still unclear if it's ok for doubled rope to hang solely from that setup clipping both ends to the hydra pulley on my bridge. Wouldn't be for long but just to advance tip. Wouldn't this be the same as having it on the hip d's. If you spiked out and slipped you'd basically hang from your d's.

Why do you feel like it's unsafe to use a bola as primary life support? No rope grab is "allowed" to be but we do it all the time as an industry.
I've been using a bola for a few years now and it functions flawlessly single line, doubled to itself, and doubled hip d to hip d.
Best mechanical lanyard adjuster on the market, imo.

@Z'sTrees; I was wondering whether or not the Bola is at all "jerky" when you go to release it with your full body weight on the line. I own the ART Positioner, and maybe this is operator factor, but I do find the release to be rather sudden. I've taken to pinching the rope with my hand below the device in order to provide a smoother release.

I guess I'm just wondering if the Bola seems to operate in a smoother fashion than that, without going to the extra lengths that I do with the ART device. Thanks in advance for any answers you choose to provide.

Tim

It can be a little jerky with full weight SRT, but I think it’s manageable.

DRT/MRS it descends ok, but ascending with it as delivered isn’t very good if it’s fully loaded. That’s where the modification comes in.
