Compact Bulldog Bone

Sounds like the bomb kit right there, Tico. I doubt you'll want a neck tender, unless you find the Voltige overly bulky. I think the Voltige is close to the Swing harness so you should be good.

Best of luck! I hope your first ride is a good one.
Tanks! I'm more of a recreational DIY climber still experimenting and trying to overcome high anxiety so that's why I got the Voltige...to stop every time I start panicking, hanging in there a while and going a little further up every time. Maybe I started too late??? (middle fifties). Obviously I'd like to use it also for tending as I don't like much having anything around my neck on a tree.

In other news, the bdb is 5 year old friendly, he figured it out in 3 seconds. :p

My experience tells me that kid has a lot more than just the bone figured out. I'd give him whatever he wants!

When I get home there is a bone waiting for me, I'm trying to catch the just of these almost 100 pages....wow!
Question, what D ring is being used for tending?
The easy on like the Uni is appealing.
Yoyoman, I'll be very interested in hearing your review of the Bone. You have a wide range of experience with many devices and can probably very accurately compare and contrast this to other mechanicals! But I'm telling you right now, you are going to love it! I have only had it for a few days and am finding it to be my favorite climbing device yet. The easy on easy off is the straw that ...strengthened ...the camels back for me!

Wouldn't ever say it's too late. Grab Jeff Jepson's 'Tree Climber's Companion' and enjoy that read.

I agree about things around my neck. The chest harness might not look as clean as a neck tender, but I certainly feels cleaner to me. As a rec climber, you may enjoy the ability to sit back and enjoy the view in a chestie as you get over your anxiety. Just focus on steady intentional breath while thinking about how easily the squirrels and coons get around. ;)

Oh and yoyoman, some are using a nano swivel built right into the Bone, but I am finding that the hydra on my bridge, which you have, is giving me swivel action as well as keeping the three hole option you lose when you put your hitch climber into DEEP storage, lol. That way you can clip a lanyard above the swivel etc!

Physically I'm in South America but mentally I've been in my basement thinking about the hydra pulley and connections to the bone........you know me so well!!!!

Rich, can you enlighten me on the Hydra? If the sheave is on your bridge, can you hang from one of the side beckets alone, or would you have to hang from the middle becket?

Eric, you can hang from whatever hole you like on the Hydra/Rook......there is a management issue with multiple connections...i.e. tending pulleys facing the right direction etc. and when it is new it favors the Rock Exotica RockO but after some use the DMM Ultra works fine too and everything still stays correctly oriented.
I do favor the center of course whenever possible. With the extra two holes on the bridge rigging paw, tree holes on the Rook and the side D's I can get myself in some real tangles... ;-)
Love that thing on my bridge!

How can it be possible to safely hang from a side becket alone when that would side load the swivel axle? Is it rated for being loaded off axis?

I just downloaded the user info on the Hydra Pulley and in fact it does state that it can be loaded from any of the three holes. Sorry, but I still think that's odd. If you hang from a side becket, you negate the swivel.

Yup, tried both ascent and descent at work here today SRT, no good. Could barely descend, and going up there was an almost unusable amount of drag using the upper tether point with the lanyard over the shoulder. If vortex works right out of the box, why won't my fat tachyon go? Should I try the smallest bollard to see if it frees things up?

Smaller bollard might help but imo it won't be enough to overcome the amount of friction you are describing.

For vortex to work, the bone generally requires a shortening of the distance between the upper-arm pivot point and the upper-arm friction link.

Hope that helps.

Jeff, get a bungee or soft link like throw line through the spine hole and up the through top arms on chest harness / neck tether or with lanyard over shoulder even .Or take a pic of your setup while on rope possibly ? . Your boy can handle the camera this time;)
What the hells fat tachyon!?Hahahahaa

Gordon, I'm wondering if the Bone spine can be machined with offset holes on top and bottom, which can in effect be swapped around to form varied amounts of friction at the lower pinch. Between that and the upper bollard options, I can imagine a more adjustable user experience. Perhaps even a chart of line type and climber weight to help indicate a good range for individual setups.

Of course a one-size-fits-all design would rule, but think of how many ways a hitch can be tied for different climbers.

Musing again.

Fat tachyon would be my 2 year old line that's festively plump. ;-) I'm using a soft tether using the original holes the D ring came in. I have other lines, but would really love to get it running clean on this one! Maybe I didn't read the directions correctly. :-P I kid.

Jeff, have you tried the hole in the spine as your tending point. That is what I generally use. You saw my foray into the top tending pointo_O As long as I keep my self relatively vertical on ascent, I do not have a lot of drag. Descent I can't help with. That sucks. Wish we'd figured that. Out at the show.
