Compact Bulldog Bone

Sent my papers off to Gordon yesterday. Driving down to sf today to go crabbing for the next few days my mind kept creeping off to my new toy and trees I may climb and what if that one needed to be taken apart. I drive through some old growth and as much as I'm mesmerized I wonder how I would do it if it had to be done. One day I'll do more trees than boats
Flex, you're the third fisherman/tree worker I've met...one of them being myself. That would lead me to think its a big world, but now you own a Bull Dog Bone. Once again, it's a small small world.

Well I've definitely got some issues to work out, tried running it today with the 5/8 bollard it came installed with on some well loved tachyon, ddrt. Would barely move, my shoulders are killing me. The top moved and released smooth, the bottom is binding badly. I could collapse the upper arm fully into the bottom and still had to almost bounce on it to descend, and that was with the rope straight down below me. I gave it about an hour before giving up and going back to a VT. It was like going from a bound up taut line hitch to a spider jack on a pulley saver. I'm baffled. I could barely get the rope out of the bottom arm when uninstalling it.

Has nothing to do with ddrt vs srt I'm sure, even trying to feed out slack on the ground to set my line in the tree took both hands and way too much force.

Jeff, are you running the Bone DdRT with the standing side of the line directly back to the Bridge? If so then it sounds like the bottom arms need to be milled out wider too accomodate your tachyon. Send it back and I will tweak it for you if you like.

This is craziness. I've never imagined so many different user experiences could exist. It honestly bums me out when I hear folks having trouble.

I'm traveling right now, and I only brought one Bone. I had the opportunity just today to fly a friend's rope... a 4 year old piece of Poison Hivy I flew that slightly fuzzy rope with a 3/4" Bollard. It was sweet. No drag, smooth action. What on Earth could be the differences that lead to trouble with newer models?

Hi Mac...is the bungee of the Haas attached directly to your chest harness?
Well, now I have a mini biner on the haas bungee . And I clip that into the v of my chest harness. It is working better now than it was when I shot that vid. So yes and no:D
If that doesn't make sense let me know I will take a pic and post it later

Yes, I had the standing end of line back to the bridge. I'm gonna toy with it a bit tonight and see what I come up with, ill be climbing all day tomorrow so I'll be able to at least field test it in short order.

Any idea what the cause/effect would be, so I have some idea what to look for? These ran so smooth on the show floor at New England Grows, was baffling to have it be the complete opposite end of the spectrum running it on a slightly fuzzed rope.

Mine doesn't like the fluffier end of my cougar blue. The spliced eye and top 20 metres of so are a lot more worn in than the bottom. My bulldog definitely prefers the cleaner end of the rope.

It does, it does...however a pic wouldn't be bad to check it out properly...I ordered a bone and I'm still waiting for it so it's nice to figure out before hand what will be a functional set up...combining foot ascender, Haas, bone and petzl voltige chest harness. And/or a neck tether...Thanks!

Gordon and others, having never climbed with one of the previous versions I can't say the overwhelming success I experienced today with the latest Bone was a result of the new modifications or simply just a good combination of rope, bollard, and all... but I had a blast. Right out of the box I found it very intuitive and responded in a familiar way both in ascending and descending -familiar to a hitch climber set up, but more consistent and more fluid.
I'm on my phone right now so I am not going to go on and on, but my experience during this first day of pruning with the Bone was extremely positive. I love this device! Oh, and I love how it follows me up the line while tending using the small D. Thanks Gordon! The Bone is looking and working simply beautiful/ly!
It is living up to my high expectations.

Jeff it is frustrating. The only thing I can think of that may be different is the rope itself and the tolerance of the gap between the inner arms of the Bone. The tolerance is rather tight on the Bone and even 1/16" can make a marked difference. Also the new bones have a small groove in the spine to ease the gap there. Send it back and I will tweak it. I want you to have a good useful tool.

Can u try it SRT?

If not can you try a simulated SRT? stand on the rope while holding the rope above your head with one hand and pull up on the d-ring tether spot with the other (AT LEAST WE WILL KNOW YOU ARE SOBER);)

I can't imagine there will be that much friction.

When I get home there is a bone waiting for me, I'm trying to catch the just of these almost 100 pages....wow!
Question, what D ring is being used for tending?
The easy on like the Uni is appealing.
Looks like the same one on my dogs collar. No pun intended

Rich, I went to Lowes and bought a couple key rings with webbing and a biner for a couple bucks. Obviously the biner was trashed but the ring and webbing worked perfit for fitting the bone pin in the sweet spot up top.

Sounds like the bomb kit right there, Tico. I doubt you'll want a neck tender, unless you find the Voltige overly bulky. I think the Voltige is close to the Swing harness so you should be good.

Best of luck! I hope your first ride is a good one.

Tends UP very smooth this way, aa well as using the tether ddrt. Just having issues on the descent. It's markedly better srt, and I may have run a fine file over the backbone as there were still some evident tool marks from machining where the rope ran, seem improved. I'll give it a go tomorrow, both srt and ddrt, if still no signs of improvement, it'll be in the mail and Gordon can play with it.

In other news, the bdb is 5 year old friendly, he figured it out in 3 seconds. :p
