Compact Bulldog Bone

The bone can work fine on Vortex but I don't remember it being the best for the stock set up. I feel like you'd be better off having a bone custom made for it...or modded for it. And Vortex, being a not-so-average size tree rope these days; why use it climbing SRT? The tachyon IS THE BEST with the bone. The only reason I can figure some wont use it is because you're climbing incredibly tall trees and getting too much bounce.

And use the bone for DdRT???? Can't figure that one out. SRT is the Ferrari of tree climbing and a fatter rope really isn't important, because you're not using it like you do in DdRT. And this, coming from an ex-whiner about skinny ropes. :)

Anyway, I haven't tried all the ropes with the bone but I really don't have a desire to. I've found one I love and it's Tachyon. And SRT only. Sorry for the rant. I haven't posted in awhile and stuff got bottled up :)

I always found tachyon to provide a little to much friction on both ascent and descent with the stock bone and prefer the cougar.

With this mod I really liked it.

I didn't think I minded the thinner rope either but going back to vortex (largely because Dsmc advocates it's advantages) made the climb more fun.

This, and how much I admire the design of and enjoy climbing on the bdb, inspired me to try to make it work on vortex without rendering it unusable on thinner ropes.

Also, if you look at this thread I think you can see that people want the bone to work with the ropes they have and already like using.

IMO a bone that is more versatile in its ability to work with different rope diameters and body types is a good thing.

I'm going for Yale xtc next for fat rope easy grip. Excited about it..tried for a climb and its very good combo. I believe climbers wieght has to do with what bollard is more suitable .. for me 1/2 or 5/8 will work well I think. When I tried it was on 5/8 ..$weet setup ; ) and after I nick it or wear it out its a perfect light duty rigging line Hahaha..:ROFLMAO:

Some of you keep saying that. I still find tachyon to be so so with the bone. Too on and off. Moderation is more jumpy and takes extra care than with Yale 11.7's for me.
I'm gonna try ¹1.7 again with pinto spacer as bollard. No pivot moves or nothing . You on stock pivot point Reed ?

Starting to look like the modified RR.

The bone still works in exactly the same way Gordon made it. The only difference is replacing the link as the bottom friction point with two independant pins which allows for increasing both the length and width of the apeture.

The look is just a rough shape to eliminate excess material And could be done more elegantly.

... You on stock pivot point Reed ?

It works well with the 3/4" bollard and my original BDB, but with my home made bone, the upper pivot spacing is 5/16" closer and it has a lighter touch that I prefer.

It is my understanding that the newest BDB's have the upper pivot spacing 1/8" closer (1-3/8") that I suspect will have a very nice touch on the Yale 11.7's.

Wow, thanks for that but do remember that while my choices may be perfect for me, they might not be for others. With that disclaimer out of the way, Vortex is a great SRWP rope. I am an advocate of simple single rope systems and Vortex offers many physical advantages over it's skinnier counter parts. Plus even though virtually all power moves will be initiated with leg power, a climber will still be spending large amounts of time gripping and hanging from their rope. For this, fat rope is still the best and it works well with the BDB.
