Compact Bulldog Bone

Well the Bone is running a dream now on a clean rope. I am presently doing a job with 48 Mature Beech trees. Various states of decline, some removal but a lot of deadwooding for safety etc.

I had the go pro with me yesterday so got a bit of footage of the work and the bone in action. Hope you like it, it isn't the usual crash bash type video but a more relaxed pace. The whole climb was 21 minutes, so not a lot of work but here it is and hope you like it.

Slate away.

I was a "good dog" "chasing sticks" today too. The Bone performed excellent on the Puke. I am finding that I prefer descending/ releasing rope with the lever arms facing me, with thumb and forefinger controlling the Bone like a hitch. Wish I had a go pro...

I doubt it. I think you and the bone will like it as long as you are otherwise happy with the characteristics of kmIII.

I just ordered some 1/2" KMIII, will see how it runs and report back. I wanted a fatter and slightly static rope. It may wind up in treebay soon, keep your eyes peeled
Mac, what are you thoughts with the bone and Imori as a combo? Imori with the runner? I have been eyeballing that rope for the spring, and would love some good input.

I noticed today doing an ascent that the bone just seems to have a ton of drag compared to my wrench and also my rope runner. Is this normal , it just seems to really put a lot of resistance as im going up with my haas and foot ascender . I have a chest harness attached to it and im starting to think maybe I have the wrong bollard in it for tachyon .

5/8 bollard Jimmy?

Jimmy, put the Bulldog on your rope by it self and holding it by the tether D ring try sliding it up while holding the rope tight from below. If things are right it should glide up with no resistance. It should feel the same when rope walking.

At the 55 second mark of this video is me ascending with a rope runner , it would of been impossible with all the drag with my bone . Maybe i am doing something wrong or need to change my bollard because i don't see that much drag on you guys videos using the bone .

I've tried the large hole and the d ring installed on top, i didn't notice til today because it was my first higher ascent with it. Dont get me wrong besides that , its been money , being able to take it on and off quickly is a game changer. But I would literally use something else to ascend if its gonna have so much drag.

This may need to move to a new thread in the Rec Climbing threads, but I thought I'd start here since this is where all the Bone focus has been. First, some introductions - My name is David and I have been rec climbing for the past 6 or 7 years up in Western New York outside of Buffalo. I moved into tree climbing from over 20 years managing a ropes course in which I fell in love with moving through the canopies with greater freedom. I'd also had a few years of rock climbing a lifetime ago (I'm now 63) that left me with an indelible respect of gravity and focused attention. Like most rec climbers I've relied on a variety of DdRT and SRT systems, but aside from using a rope wrench/rope walker system, I've never tried anything like the BDB or the RR. I'm fine with the systems I've used, but I can't help but being intrigued with the Bone. Thanks to a present bout of pneumonia I've been able to read all 77 pages of this thread this past week.

Please understand that I am not a professional arborist. I feel genuinely humbled to even participate in the Buzz with such dedicated and skilled professionals. Speed of production doesn't even enter into my consciousness when climbing. So, here's my question: am I being totally unrealistic to think about using the Bone exclusively for rec climbing? In other words, is it akin to buying a Ferrari to drive to the corner store? We just finished helping put our two sons through college so gear lust hasn't been a part of my makeup for the past decade. I'm just honestly curious to learn from other climbers' experiences what the Bone can bring to me as a rec climber beyond what a rope wrench is able to do. Is the difference one of degree or is it a whole new way of exploring the canopy? Or somewhere in between?

Sorry for the length of the post, but I'd love to hear from anyone who could chime in on this.

I did not like imori on the runner, when I got it on tachyon I really fell in love with it.

The bone works well on imori, just not quite as consistently as on tachyon. I did not have any flattening issues. The problem I encountered was some inconsistency when the rope was wet. Not sure why.

Absolutely not unrealistic. The learning curve is very easy on the bone. It responds a lot like a hitch.

I don't necessarily think you will gain anything from the use of the bone over Rw and hitch. But because the bone is so easy on and off the rope, it can make canopy exploration easier, since you can redirect in a lot more creative ways without having to hassle without taking wrench and hitch off the rope.

This Ferrari is affordable enough that taking it to the corner store is not insane.

What rope are you using? I think if you keep at it and playing with combos it will all of a sudden work perfectly. That's what happened with me and the runner. It took a month or two for me to settle into it

Tachyon, Tachyon, Tachyon, all I ever hear is how great it is and how much everyone loves it. If I hear about it one more time damn it I am going to have to buy some and try it. My Vortex will never forgive me, she's like a jealous woman, lol.
