climbing pet peeves

Fallrisk ends it; Homeowner brush piles. Walk-off home run.
I was going to say the same thing! He gets a medal for that one. That is the worst ever! Sometimes I feel they spent extra time weaving branches and cutting off anything straight only to leave right angles and tangles. The worst.

Not leaving stubs on pruning cuts
Leaving stubs on removals.
People that think it's wrong to leave stubs on pruning
Instititions that teach it's wrong to leave stubs on pruning
Making live cuts over 4" on main trunk or stems
People that tell me I don't have an open mind because I won't consider their way of doing things even after I tell them I gave it up years ago for something better
Low tie in points (anything bigger than your forearm)
Low cables
$70 hand saws
Sloppy notches
People that cut sloppy notches after I tell them not to and show them how easily they can be cut cleanly
Same old same old tree videos
Whiney x tree climbers that work for tree stuff. ;)
People and companies that rip off ideas and don't give credit to the source

Boy'o'boy - there's some good ones in there - best list yet! :)
I'm an arborist - don't make me all that knowledgeable!

someone that uses your throwline only to find out they left a rats nest spaghetti ball when you open up the cube on the next job..
groundies that stand just far away enough to the DZ that they are safe, but just close enough to make you stop and think about it every time you're making a big cut.
groundies that stand 20'+ from the lowering device
groundies that chit chat with each other when you need one of them to focus on running the lines
customers that watch you all day then just as you're finished raking and chipping ask you to go up and make a couple additional cuts
gas and oil caps that piss all over your leg on the first cut of the day
wives and GFs that don't have the thoughtfulness to at least pretend to have some little bit of interest in your profession after its what's been putting food and the table and a roof over their heads
bar oil all over the bed of the truck
white faced hornets that attack when you're not even in their tree
anyone that makes me chase them out of the dz and breaks my concentration
crane operators that act like its their life at risk
leg and waist straps on saddles that won't stay adjusted
industry regulations that expect a climber with 30 years experience to handle a saw the same way a rookie does
rookie climbers that one hand a saw above their heads like they're waiving a flag
that smell that a hard hat gets during a hot summer
humidity so high you're drenched before you even get off the ground
muscle cramps that put you out of commission when you only have a few more cuts to finish the tree
man trying to work with one hand because he has a cigarette in the other
bs excuses rather than someone just saying "I hear ya, it won't happen again"
clients that wait til after they get the lawn cleaned up and beds mulched to have the tree work done
pretty much any comment easy steve makes about my videos

Customers that watch all day then leave just before your ready to go and don't leave a check, then when you call them they say "I'll have to look everything over" and "do you accept credit cards?" or "I'll put a check in the mail" and when you call a week later, "can you send me an invoice?" Or even better "I haven't had a chance during the day to look at the trees."

Or customers that need to get out of the driveway after you asked if they did then you put all the equipment in their way and you're going up in the bucket. Then come home and look agitated that they have to park on the road

Pruning Pin Oaks.
My MS201 getting stuck on anything and everything in the tree.
Pin oak branches smacking my face.
A tree covered with big honkin poison ivy vines.
Wet ropes
Dirty ropes
Groundies that don't put my gear back in the right place where they found it.
Tangled throw line
Pine pitch
A cinched SRT line that won't come down.

For me it's

1 tangled throw line
2 customer comes out after you've done everything they asked, you've took off your saddle, and the rope is back in the bag in the truck ready to go and they say oh can you get that one limb their...

Other climbers that call me lazy and narcissistic for asking my Groundsman to tie on my pole saw on the rare occasion I use it because I didn't feel like scrambling through the giant spreading densely tangled canopy of the Box elder I'm working on with it hanging off my belt.

Drewtree, despite all the insults I appreciated the discussion and found it useful in thinking about the balance between the needs of the climber vs the demands on the groundsman.
