climbing pet peeves

I have the plastic smoke visor face shield for my kask. Although I use it in replacement of safety glasses. Probably not proper protocol-but I used to wear safety glasses and would constantly get shit in my eyes while my glasses would fog up. Neither happens now with that face shield.

Just thought it would be fun to throw out a few things that bug you, not trying to hate on any one. In no particular order

carrying a knife while climbing, especially something in a sheath
handsaw leg scabbards
face shields on helmets, especially if you are also wearing glasses
anything less than a 16in bar on a full size climb saw
foot ascenders on spikes(sorry mike)
carrying hand pruners while climbing
using slings to make a foothold
claiming that you never need pole pruners and can make proper cuts with a pole saw
not re clipping your chain saw after making a cut, and letting it hang off you like an anchor
rock exotica $60 caritool, sorry transporter(totally different...)
whistles on helmets(that's going to generate some hate)
putting your lanyard on before every HANDSAW cut( I know they are sharp)

there are lots more, try not to hate, join in on the rant

I hate homeowner or pro arborist stubs left on trees that you don't see until you make a swing and your nuts land on it, they like to hide them on pine trees. If Pfanner made a jock strap I'd buy it until then my nuts will forever be in danger.

So the idea is to patch yourself up in the tree and get back to work?
I hated face masks till I got a protos.

I don't understand how you could hate helmet whistles. They have come in extremely handy for me

I'm not sure why, prob because people constantly blow them when they are not in trouble. I'm really just joking around. Sounds like I got u on the visor and the whistle. I work with plenty of great guys who do all of these things

Blood stopper/ tm first aid kit (same thing?) has always seemed silly to me as well. If you are capable enough to use it aloft, why not rap out and do you doctoring on the ground?

Ha, that's the spirit Levi, I almost included those. this will piss people off, rec climbing. Really, u don't climb enough trees at work?

1. Rape whistles. It's pretty pathetic when you have to blow on a loud whistle to attract rapists.
2. People who describe any tree that doesn't have nuts and squirrels in it as "some kind of pine tree".
3. Being told by a homeowner that a tree is about 90 feet tall, and having to climb the stupid thing with a tape measure just to prove to them that it's 37 feet tall.
4. Having to tell someone that no, it is not normal for a 60cc saw to take 20 minutes to cut a 10" log.
5. Trying to remember what else pissed me off last year so I can make longer pet peeve lists.

When the groundie keeps asking if I need the lowering line back when I am no where near a cut or keeps asking questions they don't need to know when I am trying to think and plan. Pole gear should never hang in a tree should be on a lanyard. I use a good system for my pole saw and pole pruner, just plain safer for everyone. Chainsaws should be on a lanyard also in case you need to let go for any reason. Hand pruners are for fruit trees and jap maples and such. using them 50 feet up is going way to detailed and unnecessary. Anybody making a notch cut with a hand saw, if you need a notch probably big enough for a chainsaw. WOW this is fun lets see, climbers who refuse to use pole gear insisting they climb to every cut, even in a giant cottonwood trying to make a end weight reduction cut ,yeah right.

1. People who make pet peeve lists...;)

  1. Ball lock carabiners
  2. People who wear hardhats instead of climbing helmets
  3. Climbers who feel the need to communicate EVERY cut
  4. Captive eye carabiners
  5. The excessively long lanyard thing
  6. Groundies not warming the saw before sending it up
  7. That one leaf/twig that never wants to get raked
  8. Starting the chipper as soon as we get out of the truck and not shutting it off until the last leaf has gone through
  9. Dull pole saw
  10. Those who wear ear plugs
  11. Lack of gear storage space on the truck
  12. Guys who bring some smelly nasty shit for lunch and insist on eating it in the truck...with the windows up
  13. Cell phones (You're gonna get a branch to the head if I see it out while work is going on)
  14. Shitting in the dump box
  15. Customers
  16. Dog shit in the yard, on my rope, on my boots
  17. Ego
  18. Guys who get a hard on for cranes
  19. A bunch that have already been mentioned

I thought it was gear. In that case I go with 6 13 15 16 19.
Guys who can't tie a not and send you up a different mess every time. Guys who ask to use my saws. Loose chains. Walking under me when I'm cutting. Raking like old people screw. Estimator screwing the pooch and the boss expecting production to make up for it. Running over my climbing rope with the loader. Not paying attention to the climbing line in a jumbled mess.

2-5 yr guys who've seen it all
watching me pick up piles that should of been cleaned up
smoking in the tree (I will swing over there and slap you)
guys who think tree work is important
sensitive tree guys

I have seen...it....all.... on YouTube.

The saddest part about that one is... damn near everything has shown up on there... lots of it stuff I really didn't want to see. And I can't go there if I have anything that I want to get done, cuz I'll watch one or two videos, then say, "just a couple more" until it's 3 AM and my eyeballs ache from watching all that stupid crap. Then, I'm convinced that there is no hope for our species and start hoping the Swine Flu mutates, again... :(

I can understand your qualm with these blood stopper pouches. However, I carry one (and so do a lot of other climbers) because it provides extra lumbar support on the Treemotion and Treemotion S. Light.
I'd argue most people who buy these do not anticipate ever having to use these stopper pouches/bandages; but hey, you never know, it could give you some extra time to get emergency care if you happen to cut yourself.
