One...million...dollars.

Are you really a CitiBank Exec, disguised as an arborist? Those are the only dudes who got million $ bonuses this year.

and that was only the retention bonus!

Well I just saw my present Avatar. INSANE! The plot and story and all were good but the trees took the cake. The 3D made you feel like you were climbing (but just couldn't see the whole view) A must see for climbers. Filmed in New zealand enough said

One thing I thought could be more realistic was when they blew up the family tree (Yes mark you are doomed!

) there was no wind. and with a tree that size there would have been one hell of a wind.

That's the problem I see with bonuses Dooley, there's always a chance of an ungrateful attitude when it becomes a habit. Hats off to you for your generosity though.

My guys pitched in and bought me a cool Eagle's nest hammock swing, a Satellite radio for my truck, to replace the one in my truck that was stolen, and some ammo for my .357. All my full-timers got cash and a week paid vacation from Christmas to New Years. I didn't give any raises this year because of the uncertainty and weird waves of work, but we finished strong, and I wanted to let them know it was noticed. Now I just hope the phone will start ringing after the new year, my winter work file can only last so long......

Noel, That is just showing off. I will be glad when I can reward someones efforts in that manner. For Christmas bonus they got $100 each. But my financial balance really sucks at the moment. Also I try to give them extra throughout the year. Also I remember all of the stupid things they have done just out of laziness, forgetting a rope, forgetting a chainsaw, rakes, shovels, breaking mirrors on truck, etc. everytime they do that stuff I just say "Merry Christmas" but I still don;t think they get it.

UH, winterbush, you may want to have a meeting about that. Make it clear first that damage and loss of equipment have an impact on Christmas bonuses. Then when you say "Merry Christmas" they just will get it. At the end of the year be sure that the bonuses reflect the impact of either the improvement on performance or the opposite.

The graphics were excellent in Avatar though the story was pretty stock. The tree was called Hometree though, so Marc you're safe, for now......

We gave our guys and gals $500 to $1000 each. Got one thank you. Piss me off.....

When they don't say thanks, it seems more like they think they are entitled to it, deserve it or expect it. What a bunch of ingrates. That would piss me off too.

that does piss you off- if you are the boss and you give and don't get a thank you or even a simple gift in return. I've felt I've always given pretty good gifts and bonus pay amounts to the co-workers at Christmas.

This year was very nice, two of the men gave me gifts for a change. There has been many years that I got nothing. As a boss, this tells you something about those employees bigtime.

Things are a bit tight this year, but I gave bonuses anyway (I'll find $ somehow) and also a personal coffee mug to each worker with pictures of them on different tree jobs. I think the mugs turned out pretty cool. Also our other climber got an Ergovation Saddle coming to use at work.

The year before we gave bonuses and knives.

It is nice to hear a thank you from anyone you give something to. Some people do think they're entitled to a bonus or a tip for that matter. I was tempted to leave a minimal tip or nothing at all tonight at the local bar/pool room. The waitress was too busy talking to the bartender to come over and take my order so I went to the bar. I felt that she would've only thought me cheap if I didn't tip. Such is society today...

I brought the boss a couple of cases of beer from Canada earlier this year as a measure of my appreciation.

I'm sorry to say that I didn't have enough around to give a bonus this year. Only my third Christmas in business, plus I got married this summer, and had a 3 week wedding/honeymoon. One of my employees has been along for a few months, and the other only a few weeks.
Last year, I don't know if I had it to give, but I gave some extra dough. The guys now are earning more per hour, though. I also have some steady work lined up for a little while. Fruit tree pruning should come in soon. Maybe a spring bonus.

I suppose admitting times are tight on the Buzzboard may be helpful to others working hard, and staying afloat, in this economy, but not making enough to offer such generous bonuses as some are able. Living in the state capital of a broke state government state has made it a less lucrative year. Lots of layoffs, but my wife's job with WaDNR seems secure.

Sometimes, on forums, we see the best and greatest and flashiest, kinda like TREE HOLLYWOOD or as some have called tree porn. Nothing is wrong with this. Its inspiring.
Though, I imagine that people sometimes forget that everybody has to do some raking, chipping and other not-as-glamorous-as-(INSERT: big crane removal, sketchy hazard tree, beautiful prune, preservation cabling)-type-work.

As Reg Coates said about being a contract climber, in addition to the big removals he's known for, he prunes, chips, whatever is on the agenda for the day.

I suppose work enough for the three of us on a pretty solid basis will have to be reward enough for us for now. Hoping for next Christmas to be able to spread some extra around.
