Its painful for me to see those large wounds on the trunk.. Looks like some one convinced the owner that the tree "needed to be pruned" then proceeded to cut all the lower limbs off. The large vertical strips of decay associated with the wounds are a result of the pruning cuts, they do not come from rips.. Obviously the tree will not be able to compartmentalize that decay and this will eventually compromise the trees ability to hold itself up... IF IT MAKES IT THAT LONG...
I cringe just thinking of the stress that tree must be under when that summer sun bakes the trunk and root zones that were once shaded by the large lower limbs...
Whoever pruned that tree murdered it, even if he's not around to see the ultimate results of his negligence... Its just a matter of time... either the decay or the stress will kill that beauty... Painful to see it... and probably the company that did the pruning thought they were doing good work... Just a shame there is so much ignorance in companies that own chainsaws and ropes... I see it all the time... wonder if they spiked it too? probably thick bark on that Momma..
Thanks for sharing that one Jerry.. Hopefully some day "elevating" will be seen as the same type of harmful and unacceptable practice that topping is generally recognized as today...
