Best climbing helmet

I'm looking for the best or what you think is the best climbing safety helmet. My Dad's looking for one, and he's going to buy a few others for his crew, so maybe the first and second best choices. Thanks alot

I have two Vertex helmets. I've taken a couple good shots while wearing them. One was hard enough to make me see stars. The other time the screen and one side of the ear muffs got knocked off. Both times I was glad I was wearing them and sad that I wasn't smart enough not to do stupid things.

Only thing I don't like about the vertex is the adjustor in the back. The Ecrin Roc has adjustments on both sides that seem, to me, to adjust easier. The Vertex is better with muffs; the Ecrin Roc is better without. Don't forget about the pacific Kevlar helmets, A lot to be said about those as well. .02

I do agree with you there RogerM. All the crew has muffs & shields so Vertex works best for us I guess. I somehow feel as if I am still wearing it even though I took it off 2 1/2 hours ago...

Remember when choosing a Helmet that the material it is constructed from will have bearing on it's lifespan. As will chemicals it may come in contact with.

The Kevlar Pacific helemts have a minimum expected (reasonable wear and tear) lifespan of 5 years. Rule of thumb with plastic is about 2. If you leave it in the back window of your civic for a month UV with degrade it as will DEET come mozzy season in May/June.

Vertex Best for me. One of the members of of my crew was hit by a shifting/falling branching hard enough to make him see stars and give him one hell of a neck strain, but the helmet stood up just fine. No sign of damage other than the smear of the log, but yes, we did retire the helmet anyway.

I have a smaller head and the ecrin roc works best for me. It's light, easy to adjust and comfortable for all-day use.

I do not feel that the Pacific kevlar are worth the price, I have had one crack without being hit (honset, I promise!) and have seen a few others that have cracks in them. The suspension system in the Pacific also rubs me the wrong way, like a big knot digging into the back of my head.

never worked in a vertex. I like the helmet's features and all but it didn't fit well on my noggin.

ecrin roc all the way!

I like the vertex for everyday work too, but what about this one? http://en.petzl.com/petzl/SportNews?News=136

I use them both.

The Vertex vent with 'earmuffs' for the chainsaw use. I loved it until I found the other lightweight gem. I use the Meteor III for the day to day handsaw pruning. There is no spot on them to attach the muffs.

The Meteor III is so light that you really forget to take it off during the lunch break.

Treespotter,

The Meteor III weighs right at half of what a Vertex or Ecrin Roc weighs, obviously due largely to the generous vents in the Meteor III.

A couple of questions:

1- I'm a little concerned about twigs, etc. getting through the vents. Probably more a nuisance than a 'hurt' issue, but have you notice that to be a problem?

2- What's your impression of how would it work in colder weather? I.e. I realize no helmet is necessarily 'warm' but they do trap heat, esp. the non-vented ones; looks like the Meteor III may let all the heat out. That been a problem?
