Avant Thread!

We had a hedge removal and grind that was falling dangerously behind schedule.
Then I tried this..
Job done on time, cheque in bank.

Mick do you know what engine they configured that machine with ? I’m looking at possibly getting 7 series with kohler diesel 57 hp and was curious how they are working out ? Maybe you have some insight ? Thanks for your time either way

If you go bigger Branch Manager has some phenomenal larger grapples now. I looked at them at TreeTopia 2024. For a modest amount more weight 10 inches more opening, far more crushing force, made of far stronger steel thus lighter package than normal. Tempting to buy one for my 528 to deal with bigger rounds. (Price brought me to my senses - approaching $5k if I recall.)

Yes,it’s the Kohier 57hp.

It has had electronic issues, the DPF is a pain, had to do 2 regens in 400 hours. Inline fuel filter got blocked (despite regular services) this threw the ‘puter into a tizzy. Just had it back after another issue regarding oil pressure (was a loose connection on the ignition barrel not oil pressure)

All in all I’d say it’s over complicated by various sensors/safeguards.
The 49hp engine I had in my 750 was old school and gave me no issues.

I don’t hate it, but you’ll need your dealer nearby and helpful, which I have to be fair.

Just my 2c.

I’m definitely a bmg fan and that’s not bad price , I think I paid more for my little Avant grapple. The opening size is lackluster on big rounds your right I find myself cutting little grab holds from time to time.

I cut grab holds too fairly often.

Just found a flyer I kept. Model T3005 and T3010. 66 inch opening 3k capacity instead of 2k. And the T3005 dangle model has a "detent" position that allows the grapple to sit wide open straight in line with the direction of travel so you can scoop up brush as you move forward to get a more full turn of brush.

I’m trying to envision this …..

Big C shape like a gapping mouth open straight in front of your loader as you drive forward.

Grapple jaws fill with far more branches scooping along the ground than if you just lower a 66inch opening straight down onto a branch grouping.

Do you use some trick to get your (older model?) BMG grapple to stay open like that? I've never happened to have my older model land in that position.

Admittedly I don't scoop branches up to feed the chipper.

I have power rotation so I just turn it until it’s inline with the machine and then tip the boom back and down, if we’ve dropped a conifer and cut off all the limbs I can drive alongside the log and scoop up a big mouthful of limbs faster than I can pick them up one at a time and create a pile. It’s useful occasionally

90 XP chipper that I usually hand feed, focus is more on pruning than removal, and Avant is rarely on jobs for brush.

I did do a lot clearing of 14 pine trees and rented a Bandit 12 XPC. That was fun and easy to feed with the Avant. If I go to get a bigger chipper I'm wanting a disc unit that throws equally hard 360°, and then would like to have it on tracks.

I’m looking at a 640 now and was curious if anyone ran / runs one with the kubota 1505 engine?
Or maybe I can start a new thread I love the Avant just not too familiar with that engine!
Did some googling on it not a hell of a lot came up which I think is a good thing.

My 635 has the 1505. Knock on wood, trouble free. My biggest complaint is that my local Kubota dealer can‘t answer any questions about it because they’re a “tractor dealer not an engine dealer” It’s also hard to start in the cold. Not uncommon for diesel I know, but more so than it should be. Granted, it’s stored outside and doesn’t have a block heater. It has also survived being on it’s side I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one and I’d love a 640. I bought mine used with over 1000 hours and it’s nearing 1500 now. Always finding additional uses for it as well
