Autumn Blaze is not leafing out

My autumn blaze, which has been fine every year, is not leafing out this year. I can see the bud growth, but unfortunately no leaves. I looked online and someone suggested to look at the buds so I took one off and it was green inside and outside. Every other tree here in DFW and around me has leaves. I super thrived it yesterday to try and give it some extra motivation. Any ideas, should I worry? Thanks for any help/advice.

We don't use any herbicides at the house. We did have a hard freeze, but that hasn't bothered it before.

No worries. The one in my yard is just starting to leaf out. I'm in Georgia.

It could be a girdling root. This will cause it to leaf out late. A picture of the root flare would help.
