Re:Alpine stumper .. thumbs up

Boy this thread is all over the board, funny thing after readin back an forth about the alpine stumper, I'm demo'in in Elgin IL to a tree guy and damned if he didn't have an alpine in the back of his truck. We dragged a 10" and 14" spruce out and then he ground both stumps out in about 10 minutes. /forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gifI couldn't believe my eyes They let me try it, Tom you were right it is built very well and is light enough for a healthy man to carry. Barring dropping it on the power head it seems tough enough to give to those tough tree guys on my crew. After owning that stupid Husky /forum/images/graemlins/9lame.gifgrinder I would of never thought a chainsaw grinder would cut it. I think it damnn near competes with a ray junior and it'll grind anywhere you can carry it. I'm sold I'm buyin one maybe 2, the cost of go'in back for, or hassle of draggin a trailer will pay for this thing quick. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forum/images/graemlins/applaudit.gif

Dave the tree guy

Would'nt you know my batteries when't dead in my camera so no pics to back my story

Re:Alpine stumper .. thumbs up

I'm impressed with Alpine's confidence, money back if you don't like it! Wow. I'm on the order list, supposed to get mine in 'bout 3 weeks. Was really worried about making a mistake though. I anticipate it will work well for my little one man band.

I am thinking about getting a mini with a grapple and a stump grinder. My question is how productive is the stump grinder compared to a carlton 7015 or any other stump machine. I plan on doing some 30"+ stumps and I don't want to be there all day. I am working on getting a test run with the bobcat mt52. I feel like that is the best one out there, plus there's a dealer right down the road.
this one looks nice too (boxer).

thanks

Re:mini stump grinder

I can just picture all kinds of folks wanting to answer you on this. It has been an active topic.
You might want to check previous posts on this subject, it has been covered alot (just to bring yourself up to speed).

Re:mini stump grinder

I'd like to here something positive on that grinder attachment, good luck, what do they want for it?

Re:mini stump grinder

I was told that in order to run the stump attachment properly you need a high hydraulic output (around 14gpm I was told is good). Thomas has 11.5 gpm and bobcat has 12 the boxer has 14. I heard great things about the grapple and will probably get it even if the grinder works like crap, but it would be nice for around $3,200 extra to have a good grinder. I am still working on a test run, but I don't think they will let me grind a stump out to see how it works. I am probably going to have to rent it for a day or two.

That's assuming that you can keep the Carlton running long enough. /forum/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Re:mini stump grinder

so....
tell us about it!

Does it sweep hydralically or does the machine move it side to side?
Please say hydrallically!

To what depth will it cut?

How much does it weigh?

belt driven? or hyd motor?

Re:mini stump grinder

My crew has staken it out twice now, and they report back that it works well. Give the credit to the Aussies though, Kanga manufactures a 20hp grinder like mine, I have not been able to locate one in the US I contacted a dealer in Austrailia and he said he could get me one for 12,5 + shipping, No wonder I can't find one around here. I have an engineer working out the details, and hopefullly a respected tooth manufaturer is going to design a pattern for the wheel. I'm looking at a 31HP Generac engine. Can't guess what its gonna cost yet, but I hope it comes in under 9K. I hope to have the machine ready for TCIA in columbus but only if its economical and efficient.
Mark I'm only familiar with the small 25hp machines, Vermeer, Rayco, and Carlton.
My personal opinion is those machines are efficient on ~14" stumps and smaller, we sub out all our larger stumps. I hate Stumps

Thanks, cutt'in Iron is fun to

How bout it, anybody have or seen a Kanga stump Grinder out there?

Re:mini stump grinder

Questions, good questions,

The mini runs the all the hydraulic swing and tilt (Now you got two engines running)

Don't know how deep yet (guessin at least 12" maybe 20")

bout 500 #s

Direct belt drive

Re:mini stump grinder

I'm constantly amazed at how much JUNK you other tree guys buy.

No grinder on a mini is going to be worth crap. No grinder on a normal skidloader is any good yet either.

Fecon's new grinder attatchment might be okay, haven't seen it in action yet, you better have some high horsepower high-flow though (like OVER 45)to run any decent stump cutter head.

There is SO much junk out there and guys keep buying it. I don't know why people can't look at how things are made and make an intellengent decision, and at least SEE how they perform and see that they are junk.

Heres some junk I saw recently, Conehead chipper, and the Beaver squeezer grapple. Also, notice this, the retards that build this junk also can't come up with good names.

Chippers: go with Brush Bandit, only.

Stumpgrinders: go with RAYCO and go with hydrostatic ONLY, no junky belt driven trash. For a small self propelled grinder: Super RG50 4X4 model(66hp) (although the new RG85 might be the new best, 82hp). Big grinder, go with RG 120 DXH it'll take 4 inch swipes -this actually makes stump grinding fun (120hp).

Re:mini stump grinder

You know I agree with the general concept of what you are saying.
"Use a hammer to hammer and a screwdriver to screwdrive" Having a swiss army type machine could very well mean that nothing on it works real well but It'll do all kinds of stuff.
HOWEVER, when you factor in the costs of basic tree equipment the list and costs really add up.
So this idea of a machine that will:
Mow brush/weeds
Auger Holes
Lift & carry just about anything
Rotortill
Hump Brush
Load Logs
AND go through a 36" opening
and all you have to do is dump some fuel in them to make them go.
You know what this sounds like? Sorta like either an Indentured servent or maybe a boss having their son/daughter slaving away for them for a mere pittence.
Mini-skids are the way to go. I think they have a place in the bigger companies but an even greater place for the small owner-operator type company.
Why be forced to hire on 3-4 folks on a bigger job? It can really suck the profit right out of a job having that many people.
