Acer buergerianum is my current guess for these trees. Can any of the experts here confirm or correctly identify? Thanks for any help.

If you have any pruning advice, I'm all ears (or perhaps that should be eyes since I'm reading responses.)

Good call. You have an atypical leaf in the third photo. I did an assessment of one last summer where the entire tree had atypical leaves. It had me stumped for a short time. The wood is beautiful in those trees. I did a removal a number of years ago and had a piece turned for the client. My friend who does turning did a bowl for them that almost looked like Cherry.

As far as pruning- personally I’ve never done much to the ones I’ve worked on. Some clearance, removal of crossing branches, the occasional subordination of codominant stems, deadwood. In my experience they don’t require any specific pruning but they are nice to work on. Plenty of laterals to reduce to and generally good branch collars

The two I'm looking at are on either side of the front entrance to a smallish 2 story commercial property. They've gotten a bit too big, someone didn't really plan for how large they would become. They need to be reigned in a bit to keep them away from/off the building. They're not too out of control yet, so not a major prune, will be less than 10%. I recommended waiting until Jan-Feb to prune.

Acer may be the best genus to learn and work on structural pruning. They can be a system of codoms at their worst
