I can't imagine they bid that right, or they have the gear. Maybe it was Dave....I dunno, looked like alot of wood though.
Here's a couple shots from some downed trees we had. That was one hell of a gust...

You can see a little queen palm under there if you look close..

Here is the culprit of the extensive decay found in the root zone of this Palo Verde and a contributing factor to the failure...

what did you do with that rootball?

Knocked all the dirt off of it, cut the stump as close to the root plate as possible and loaded it in the back of a pick-up. It was heavy.

I didn't really get very many storm damage calls. No ads out now, so only calls were from clients...and my trees don't blow over

A closer look at the root grubs, some of the biggest I've encountered. They were buried deep in the root ball...
good source of protein too!

Saute'd with butter and white wine, mmmmmm...gruuubs.

sorry to post my grub pics on your thread jesse. Just wanted to say I really don't like storm damage time. Hacks come out of the woodwork, good people getting gouged, and it kinda breaks my heart to see so many large trees down like that.

Was out to Blue Ridge on Wednesday, if you want to see pines broken in half and up rooted that is the place to be. A lot of the homeowners were lucky, seen many trees/tree tops only a few feet away from causing a lot of damage. We were lucky in Flagstaff, though we did have a few blown over trees as well, and about 2+feet of snow.

Jesse,

Bummer.
You surely lost the job to hacks...maybe uninsured ones...

Though I doubt you'd have needed more than 1.5 40 yard self loader loads.

We got 5 of the 6 cottonwoods felled today. Bigger than I thought. A bit of brush left to chip...and more raking. Cottonwood breaks into a million pieces. Prolly 10 cords of wood, so 1.5 trash truck loads.

The last tree has a 7-10 degree back lean toward a house. We'll set my 19000 tensile static line, face it up, tension with truck (loaded with 18 yards of chip ballast!), add 4-1 mechanical advantage backed up with portawrap on truck, start backcut, pull a little more, then block the wheels, and rely of 4-1 if needed to bring it over. No fu-k-ups allowed.

I'm happy with my bid, but it would have taken twice as long if the ground wasn't frozen. We were able to back the chip truck right up to everything.

Sean,

We have a number of free dump sites. Mercer Is takes chips. Seattle Parks takes them, only 5 miles from me.....Shoreline school District has work parties now and then, and calls me. And homeowners often call. If I need more sites, I hit craiglist.

On the portion of the bid I didn't get, I was the high bidder. It seemed to be a days work, so I bid $3800...some wood removal, my crane guy for maybe his $350 minimum, and certified flaggers. Maybe the other companies have their own flaggers....and the low bidder could maybe have done the two hard leaning alders with his bucket truck. But he really blew the bid at $1040!!! Blew my mind, as he's a cert arb, and runs a good, small company. He was closest to me on the cottonwoods. I was $13,150, He was about 14,500, Seattle Tree Pres at 16,500, and a fourth at 17,800.

I think we'll get it done in 3.5 days...costs-about $1200-1500 for trash truck, and $800 for Bob-cat......and $160 for prevailing wage filing fees...BS that they seem....
