2016 srtwp redirects

Hey, moss! Is that your rope in that Live Oak? Were you on a trip down south when you climbed it, if so? I had the impression that the Live Oaks were confined to the warmer southern parts of the country. I need to check one of my field guides, now.

If that was your rope, just how much of a blast was it, redirecting all around the crown?

Tim

My mother used to live in South Carolina, that Live Oak is in a woods grove north of Charleston, found it randomly driving down dirt roads in January 2015 on my way back to Boston. Only had a short time to get in and climb it before the sun set. Wish I'd had more time, there are great possibilities to climb through the entire grove. I noted the location so I can return someday.

So not to take away from the fiddlesticks. I have a fs. Ring on one end and a new petzl pulley/biner on the other. What's the best midline set up for this as a redirect. Also can it be rigged retrieveable. I've been girthing a limb with the cordage through the ring and the biner placed back on after its thread through the ring. Works in a snap but isn't the best set up. Also considered a bight of my line through the ring and the biner as a lock off but thinking my weight may pull the night away from the ring. I've looked but can find info on this set up for midline installation.

Steve, are you using the rollclip as the biner catching the rope bight through the ring? Does the pulley match up well with a large ring? I like the sound of it.

I'm doing one now that is about 30-35 feet tall and 75 feet wide. Here is a photo of one I did last summer.

Wow, thanks for posting those great photos of that amazing Live Oak. It is greatly appreciated. It is hard to wrap my mind around a the existence of a tree that is twice as wide as it is tall. Really cool. Any idea on the age of that specimen? Only if you know off the top of your head; I don't want you to have to do more work just to satisfy my curiosity. I already appreciate what you've done for me so far.

Thanks again.

Tim

Just about all the big trees around here are between 60 and 100 years old. A very few large white and post oaks growing on high dry sites are in the 200 year range. A developer had a post oak cut down for an office building project about 10 years ago that was about 230 which is the oldest I have seen. The one in the picture is probably in the 80-90 year range. This site is a museum which also has a garden area that was designed by Olmstead which is pretty cool.

It does match up quite well. Really what I got was a ring fs from lukesfloor. Its a ring on one side and a large eye on the other. I also wasn't happy with the gate opening direction on the petzl so I was trying to make a good use out of both of them. I have about 4 redirects that are retrievable but seldom use them because of the trees I usually climb and the number of take downs I have been doing. I was messing with this set up in a pine after traversing using the captain. I had to go from one pine to the other then decend for some dead wood. I didn't want to ascend back up to get back to my redirect and just couldn't make it work so I used a natural redi, placed the hook above the redi on my line and went to the ground. Pulled the rope back through the redi using the hook then ascended back up the initial tree. The only thing it saved me was throwing another throw bag. Didn't save any effort on the actual climb. So I'm left thinking there has to be a better way. Had I used another biner to spike my line I could have done it without hitting the ground. Unfortunately I rarely get to prune large canopy hardwoods where I use multiple redirects. Usually it's just for work positioning. We are a removal market here for sure.

Gotcha. I've acknowledged the usefulness of retrievables for a while, but havent been convinced enough to incorporate them into my climbing until recently, so I am eagerly awaiting a shipment (Tuesday) so I can build one.

That and HUT "Holder Upper Thingy" are probably my greatest contributions to tree climbing. Feels good to make a difference ;-) Tree climbers are like Eskimos (and snow) we need many words (and acronyms) for one thing.
BS, dude. Your greatest contribution is facilitating those city kids to get up in trees. You may never know how deep that impact was for them. While I do admire your sweet acronyms, you can't forget the HIT...Hitch Independant Tether! Keep planting those good seeds, bud!
