    fixing bad pruning cuts

my current take: i have come to feel that, some times, cleaning up old bad cuts just takes more time than it is worth. And sometimes it is so hard to see just where the live tissue has made it to! Sure, you can spend a lot of time on them, and make 'em look real nice, but, really, the damage has...

    quercus agrifolia crud?

thanks for the suggestions, all. I am now far more intrigued than i was previously. I will be certain to do a more exhaustive investigation when i get back over there - silly me for not bringing a sample back to slice open. Ahhhh, pruning productivity kicked science out the door on that one -...

    quercus agrifolia crud?

Fascinating ... I'll get read up on these things in the big, expensive books. They don't appear to me to be a long-term problem from how they are affecting the trees. And they are critters that live around here, so I don't want to harass the ecology too much... But then what do I know? Am I...

    quercus agrifolia crud?

HI, I have seen this in a couple of coast live oaks i do things for in Oakland, CA. This one tree in particular has quite a bit of this sort of thing. Lesions (?) on smaller branches, only some of which have this webby growth on it. Most don't. The branches seems fine and keep on growing out...

pics from my job this week.

I like low shoes for prunes - i have some sticky rubber approach-style 5-10 shoes that are nice and rounded on the edges and get in and out of crotches easily. can't wear em on the ground much, tho, or the concrete will eat them up fast. xman, i totally know what you mean about the foot...

Guy Climbing 1786 up WITH NO SAFETY LINE!!!

at least there are no hornets to worry about up there. and, yes, Adkpk, base jump down must be the way down ;-) here's a reasonable thread derailer video to that end, makes tower climbing look like a walk in the park: freebase! gadzooks! http://vimeo.com/7255734

Guy Climbing 1786 up WITH NO SAFETY LINE!!!

i dunno about unsafe work practices: in the audio of the video (prolly about 2/3 of the way through) it is explained that the regs permit free climbing in this situation. That it is faster, less tiring, and safer than clipping and unclipping. This, of course, is with a 30 pound gear bag hanging...

Mulching: Green Wood Chips Vs Soil Nitrogen

Back in my days of orcharding in SLO, we would rake the trimmings from winter pruning out into the rows and them run 'em down a few times with a shredder towed behind a tractor and leave them there. Not the fire blight on the pears, of course. We burned that. Everything else got that treatment...

    CMI Twin Expedition

Thanks Tom, You'll love it - that is actually a big sierra mountain juniper (40' maybe?) - i think that juniperus occidentalis var.australis (which they are changing to juniperus grandis, looks like) is what is meant by that. In any case, a tree instead of a shrub, this one is at 9000 feet or...

    CMI Twin Expedition

[ QUOTE ] Back to the thread...I'm delighted to see this new tool in the market. It solves safety issues that had been hard to fix previously. It is such a nice tool I almost...ALMOST...would go back to DdRT in order to justify buying it [/ QUOTE ] Tom, as an SRT climber, would you use...

umbellularia californica - monster toxic removal

Re: umbellularia californica - monster toxic remov chip downwind! get a bottle of saline nasal spray mist to hose out the ol' turbinates from time to time. seriously "aromatic" when the chipper is running. i have seen the respirator itself pulled out for that - perfect combo for a hot day. good...

recomend me a 7/16 line please

Tom, I use a newer lefty pantin, rated up to 1/2 in. everything else for ascent is rope right now, though I am looking into buying a hand ascender soon, too - was going to go with a CMI or Petzl Ascension - this new twin CMI is interesting, but I don't know if I ascend enough doubled rope to...

recomend me a 7/16 line please

tachyon was leading the list for me to purchase to run SRT with, but then there's the new Imori out and about...what's up with that stuff? maybe it is too fat to run with some of the hardware, but i am only using hitches and then ascenders that are perfectly happy with arborplex's 1/2in. profile...

    Camelbak

Yep - I usually use the small camelbak bottle (the adult sippy cup we call it) on a biner. It *hangs really nicely* and you don't really feel it is there. One handed drinking operation. the mechanism for flipping out the spout will get a little full of chips when you are running a chain saw, but...

    Urban trees help bird migration

saw this on the BBC the other day - haven't seen it anywhere else yet - thought folks here would appreciate: a study by landscape ecologists at Ohio State University concluded that: Urban Trees 'help migrating birds' http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10130458.stm spread the...

    Climbing Boots

i bought a pair of Scarpa Kailash GTX Boot a few months back and like them. I see some online for $10 right now. They are pretty light for a hiking boot and I don't know that they will last long, but they are doing well so far. Nice soft sole, sticks really well. May not be great for spikes...
