Guy Climbing 1786 up WITH NO SAFETY LINE!!!

that was pretty cool.

I want to go there at night an trespass climb it. kinda kidding.

yeah; right away i thought, all they had to have is a cable and an ascender or cable grab and the climber has a saftey at all times.

that's what I have set up when people climb my cable ladder 60 feet to ride the zipline at my house. I don't want anyone dying for slipping on the ladder. Simple.

then I read a few other post and saw you guys already called it, " A cable and a cable grab like Tom said".

Pretty cool video, can't believe it got that many people viewing so fast.

Many of the tree work videos are better than this, but maybe I think so because I'm an arborist?

had to stop watching it as I was getting vertigo!

Thems tower climbers are just plain Nutz! Clearly this one took no precautions whatsoever...What are the standards for "Working at height?"

i dunno about unsafe work practices:

in the audio of the video (prolly about 2/3 of the way through) it is explained that the regs permit free climbing in this situation. That it is faster, less tiring, and safer than clipping and unclipping. This, of course, is with a 30 pound gear bag hanging from a tether below you!

They do tether in to rest as you notice. I wonder, though, on the way back if they lower themselves on a rope or if they have to downclimb? My guess is downclimb.

one thing for sure though, it gives me a stomach ache just watching it!!!
ok back to work,
pete

He said those were the regs but Im quite sure he is F.O.S.
Dude was too lazy to even open his snap for a propper tie in when he did rest. Hell Ill just throw my lanyard over this stub(steel step)...that will be fine....

Base jump.

wow. BALLS.

I'm sure I would NOT want leather gloves and work boots for that. No sir. Give me some atlas gloves and approach shoes.

Exactly what I was thinking. Leather gloves are slippery. Atlas (or other ugly gloves) would be my choice too. They would be much more grippy.

Seriously, there would be much better ways to do this effeciently and safer.

I enjoyed the video, but I think the practice is lame.

Just a precursor look found several references to the professional mantra "Tie or Die" in tower climbing. One BLS report said that tower climbers and assemblers had a fatality rate in excess of 160 per 100,000 workers, making it almost 4 times as dangerous as tree work. Obviously, the tower erection industry is not as large as the tree care industry, but still...

If you google "OSGA Regulations Tower Climbing" you will find several relevant articles, though I have yet to find the specific OSHA reg. I'm sure it can be found. Somewhere.

that was the worst example i've ever seen of industrial safety. he should have been tying into the post not the steps. i was setting some elevator towers once that had welded climbing steps for steel erection and one of the steps came off in my hand!
