    Pollarding time

Yeah, real light. 100 pages on a pruning technique I don't use, but I'm compelled to read anyway. Thanks!

I will answer since I'm online and I'm not sure if Mike is. This is based on my reading of the law. 1. Just on staff in a supervisory role. They do not necessarily need to be the one doing the work and they do not need to be on every job site. 2. It was. The business licensing issue (which...

I agree, I guess there just isn't a perfect system for all of this. Someone will always feel like they're being locked out.

Just pay the fee and take the exam. The Board of Tree Experts only wins if you keep failing and paying again.

You're eligible. I've read and re-read the actual law many times. If you have a two-year degree then you only need 2 years of continuous documented experience. If you have 3 years of continuous documented experience then you are eligible without the education requirement. You're all set - just...

I think the idea behind the regulations is a good thing. Tree companies should be checked for proper insurance. The business registration and licensing is a really positive aspect of the legislation. What I don't like, is that this law has essentially moved the goal-posts for arborists. The...

Unfortunately this is a separate issue from pesticide applicator licensing. Two licensing processes. In NJ if you climb or operate a bucket you cannot also apply pesticides to trees unless you have a licensed tree expert as well as a licensed pesticide applicator. However, a landscape company...

Yes, as long as they are "ground based." This is all assuming you do not have an LTE on staff. Much more difficult. Consists of a written portion and a field portion.

Contact the board. In my experience it is headed by some very reasonable people whose main concern is making sure our industry does not get tanked. You may not be eligible to sit for the LTE exam, but what about the LTCO? Also, what part of New Jersey are you in? If you can get your CA I believe...

    Chippers.. they're so cool!

How do you dispose of your work without a chipper? The bulk stuff can be made into firewood or boards, but what about the branches? There is zero market here for leaving debris behind unless you work for pennies and don't mind getting calls from homeowners about when the debris will be removed.

    Herbicide damage?

How high does the impact reach? I think I was imagining some taller stuff based on the sweetgum, sycamore, and pin oak references. Even the volatilized 2,4-D impact I've seen has been pretty contained to lower foliage but that may just be an experience thing and not based on actual science. Hope...

    Herbicide damage?

The 2, 4-D should not have created this kind of impact, unless he literally blanketed all of the trees with it. Maybe unless he drenched the entire area at above-label rates and maybe it rained a shit ton. But that would be a whole lot of 2, 4-D. I manage two large Pin Oaks in a very well kept...

    ID this

Always call them Tupelo, though most call them Black Gum. I just like the ring of Tupelo - probably due to the Jason Isbell song. For some reason I've been noticing more and more here in Southern Jersey - maybe I just wasn't hip to them before. Relatively acidic soils here if thats relevant to...

    How would you spend $100k?

I would skip the bucket/lift idea. They are pricey upfront and on the back end. For a small operation the most ideal setup, as far as I'm concerned is this: 1. Chip truck. 2. Chipper with 18" capacity. 3. Mini skid 4. Dump trailer This is pretty much reiterating what you already said, but...

    Iron Damage?

I think you may have been onto something about the antagonistic relationship of large amounts of Fe in relation to Mn uptake. Without knowing the actual specifics I would say the process looked something like this: 1. Customer or landscaper noticed chlorosis, decided it had to be addressed. 2...

    Iron Damage?

Are there multiple Mulder charts? The one I have has different relationships, and as far as I can tell it would be Manganese that would limit Iron, not the other way around. Edit: Yet another one shows antagonism between very large amounts of Fe to Mn. Just a little confused as to which chart...

    Iron Damage?

I know some parts of Colorado have notoriously alkaline soils so an Iron deficiency for a Maple may not be completely far fetched. Here in the Eastern portion of the country we definitely see more Manganese chlorosis in Maples than Iron. Sounds like maybe just a misguided effort to solve a...

    Trees from a distance

I will throw one up since it seems we've stalled for a couple days. I run into specific neighborhoods that will have a few of these but for the most part I don't see them too often.
