I will have to look in to sourwood more. My experience with them is just in the forest. Seems like a tree that likes some acidity? I always associate them along side sassafras and in my mind visualize pileated woodpecker holes on the trunks lol.
I’ve concluded a lot of those small-medium size cool natives need protection from the west and lots of soil conditioning. At least where I live now. Some older parts of town like German Village seem to have nice deep rich soils that I don’t have the pleasure to work with very often.
Tom, catalpa as a street tree???? I love them but have zero experience with them as a street tree.
Been searching high and low for autumn treasure hophornbeam (ostrya). Everywhere is sold out. Supposed to be a more urban tolerant cultivar.
Frontier elm
Yellowwood
Boulevard linden
Amur maackia...
A tree that reaches at least 40x20’ I suppose. When I research the different Ginkgo cultivars, they usually suggest the Princeton sentry as the ideal street tree but I have concerns it will just be an upright stick compared to autumn gold or magyar.
From what I gather, ginkgo are not known for...
I’m working on a spring street tree planting project in a 6.5 foot tree lawn. I definitely want to avoid trees that are known for sidewalk damage, but also want real shade trees.
Any thoughts on the best ginkgo cultivar for a street tree situation? Here’s what is currently available at my local...
Can’t even tell they were butchered in the past! Looks good! Those hybrid elms can take routine aggressive pruning. Hard to get central leaders on them though just because of their natural growth habits.
If the branch unions are strong, I’ve learned to accept codominants and if a branch union...
I ended up getting this standard Makita, which should be an upgrade from what I was using previously. Most of the trees I’m bracing are under 20” DBH and I have access to a gas drill if needed...
That’s an amazing deal! Its a great pruning saw. But I was doing some pruning a couple weeks ago when the temperature was in the teens and the battery acted a little funky until it got warmed up. That’s my only complaint so far.
My one complaint about the Onyx (which they don’t make anymore) is the chainsaw holder placement is too far behind me and difficult to reach. Especially the more winter layers I put on, the further behind me it is.
Anybody else climbing on the Onyx (monkey beaver might have a similar set up?)...
No. Just smaller and darker green. Strange that sometimes it seems to help with iron chlorosis and other times I don’t notice any difference in leaf color. For this tree, it helped.
Same tree pics taken today. Still holding green leaves. Two river birch in the neighboring property almost completely bare. Just interesting noting what paclo actually does.
Re-applied paclo last spring 2024 (three years after the first application)
An ex big box green manager told me they charged $15-$25 / DBH Inch
I have generally been much cheaper unless it’s an individual tree and I have to make the trip worth while. But I do need to start raising my prices significantly!
If I’m doing multiple other services on the same property like...
I bought a pair of Lowa Camino boots and have been super impressed with them. I was worried they would be too bulky for climbing/pruning but they work great and are comfortable. I think I’ve been wearing boots without proper support for too many decades after spending a few months in these.
I...
