Except in the winter pushing tent stakes into the ground is like trying to push a wet noodle into concrete. I think @moss and his "expeditionary" cube would solve the frozen ground problem though.
Yup.in the winter i stay dry by brushing off the snow from my clothes. the only reason you will get wet in winter is if snow melts on your clothes or you are wearing a waterproof shell which keeps the moisture from your body locked inside of all your layers. (or if you fall through the ice on a...
Awesome video indeed. Climbing on a hitch in winter is a terrifying idea for me. Glad there are so many climbers on here who want to test the reliability of them so that I dont have to :)
Heck ya! There are so many guys on this forum whom I want to climb with that I forget where everyone lives, haha. I think we should plan a big recreational climb somewhere in the area for next summer. I will start trying to find a good location with big trees and permission to climb.
Ha! I sold my ice tools and crampons when my son was born but I think they would have made this alot easier. I actually slipped and had my first unintended swing into the tree and smashed my back. No injuries but it hurt.
15 degrees Fahrenheit. I am great at guessing temps but horrible at guessing wind speeds, I couldn't even ballpark the wind speed. But I was perfectly comfortable.
I used to put on my new outdoor gear, stand in the shower, and then go outside in the middle of winter for a run to see how well...
I never realized how much I rely on the friction of my shoes against the tree bark while climbing. Attempting to climb a tree which was covered in a sheet of ice changed that.
This was probably the most stupid climb I have been on in a long time. Between the ice and the wind so many things...
Last year I learned that the big green lemon-smelling balls are walnuts. And I just learned that "the annual nut crop from oak trees in North America surpasses the combined yearly yield of all other nut trees, both wild and cultivated."
And even though I would consider myself an obsessive...
I laughed out loud :)
Tree climbing is like a three-dimensional multi-level puzzle where the consequence of failure is death.
Initially I hated the idea of climbing trees. But I was obsessed with rock climbing and got to the point where I couldn't even go backpacking without bringing my...
I have only gotten in trouble for tree climbing one time. There was an enormous Cottonwood in a small park right next to a popular downtown area. It was winter so I was very exposed and 3 guys approached the tree and told me they were City officials. They were not mad but told me I had to leave...
Holy crap thank you. Years ago when the trailer for this movie came out I watched the it probably 15 times but never got to watch the full movie. I am going to watch it asap!
Hey moss what helmet cam are you using? The audio was very crisp and clear. Also, how do you keep your camera's battery from dying when you are climbing in the cold like that? My small action cams all die very fast if the temp is below freezing which makes filming winter climbs terribly time...
