Rope wrench for >$15

i think this would work really well with smaller ropes. the tension it applies is pretty excessive with my 11mm blaze. im probably gonna flip it and space the 2 holes out a bit more.

. . . But finding a solution to my 9mm rope problem has become a battle that I need to win.

I too have some 9mm climbing line that I use DRT if I have to travel light to hike somewhere (I climb SRT with 11.7 Poison ivy or Tachyon Ash normally). I made a smaller version of Surveyor's Bulldog Bone for this small line and it works great DRT. I will get it out and take a photo for you tomorrow. I also have one of Yoyoman's small removable leather cambium savers that I use with this same system. The 9mm line is 100 feet long and everything, saddle included, fits in a backpack. My hiking stick is also my slingshot for the throwline. The small Bulldog Bone was not hard to make. A hacksaw and small drill press is all you need.

I would love to see some photos! Although I must admit that I have used drt less than 3 times. Apparently it is easier for me to use something I know then it is to learn some simple techniques that would make my life easier, haha. Setting the cambium Savers was always the thing that kept me from learning DRT.

Dan house rope sleeve. Especially on small line.
Edit: And some sort of hand ascender because nobody should be grabbing 9mm line to pull themselves anywhere. It'll mess up your hands.

Love to see the bulldog bone you made as well as your hiking stick slingshot.

This smaller Bone I made might work SRT but I weigh about 175 and this might be rather a lot for the smaller device to handle. The rain has stopped and it looks like we might get some sun breaks today. I will get some photos and also might try my smaller rope and the device SRT instead of doubled thru a cambium saver. As to setting the cambium savers, nothing to it really. You just pull it up with the rope, using a slip knot under it, get it into position, then pull the other leg of the rope to release the slip knot. With just a little practice, you can nail it down in no time.

Here is my DIY hiking stick for tossing a throw line. Note that I did not invent this. I think these are called a House Shot, after Dan House who made the first one. Same guy that did the neat friction savers. Easy to use. You make up a few throw bags with strong rubber tubing like you would use on a big slingshot, then just connect the throw line to the loop on the rubber tubing and use the stick to launch it. I can fire from the hip or from the shoulder and get a good 40 to 60 feet. Does not compare for range with my 9 foot Big Shot but a lot more portable for hiking any distance. I put a wooden knob on the upper end to cushion the end when against my shoulder or hip when firing. and I have a rubber cane tip for the lower end when hiking. The stick is a little over 4 feet long, just a scrap of 1/2 inch NPT aluminium pipe I had laying about. Be sure and wear eye protection when using one of these, in case the cord breaks and you get the rubber tubing in the face!

And here is my DIY MiniBone for my small line, alongside of my genuine full size Bone from Surveyor. Works great DRT but not sure I would trust it to work as well SRT at my weight of 175. I really do prefer SRT but on a long hike the extra weight of the full size line is an issue. I can cut the weight and bulk in half by using my small stuff. I have not tried this small line SRT with the smaller Bone and my SAKA and MiniSAKA but it might work OK.

You are just about the craftiest guy.
I got to try out the little shot deal at NAOM. I was very impressed. I think his short one could be used effectively for lateral branches over 30'. It was not four feet long. Maybe three?

Tried my DIY MiniBone yesterday afternoon on single line but it would not hold reliably. I weigh too much to use it SRT on this small 9mm rope. But it holds OK DRT.

Thank you so much for the photos! You are indeed quite crafty. Too bad it doesnt hold well on 9mm during SRT. I am beginning to think that a short piece of 11mm rope is in my future if I want to start using a ropewalking system.

Em ...

So ....

There’s a big elephant in the room.

Fluffy fish, you’re not usually working in trees, you climb them for fun right ?

What’s stopping you from ascending SRT on 8mm hitch cord and then descending on a rig or whatever other descender ?

You sir are a genius :). Now I need to get an 8 mm rope.

What's the make and model on that 9 mm rope your using?

I was using Sterling HTP but I am currently using a rope that a friend let me borrow and I don't remember the brand. It was like half the price though so when he gets back into the United States I will ask him

It pains me to see you ascending on a RADS setup haha. You need to come out to Vancouver, we could brainstorm all kinds of creative / light setups.

:) post photos of it, I’m curious to know which rope

My wife is on board with me doing a big trip next year so we are gonna make it happen!

...but I am unsure how hindered I am by the rads system. It is brutally slow climbing into the canopy but when I am taking photos and working around camp it is just so darn fast.

@monkeylove and @gmcttr both sent me some gear to play with and I was way faster getting into the tree (rope walking) but when I am actually climbing around in the branches I love just tending my line with a grigri.

But I have big plans for learning some of the things that I have procrastinated learning for the past 5 years, like climbing drt.haha

I am just South of Stan across the border Stateside on an island near Bellingham. If you come out this way, it is just a 30 minute ferry ride out here and I know some fabulous trees. You can overnight in my spherical tree tent!
