    Update to the SAKA-mini-MAX

I just wrap my original SAKA around my back horizontally behind me above the back of my saddle and it never seems to be in my way, even if I want to sit down on a limb. But I do have a Mini that I carry on a rec climb if it involves a long hike with backpacked gear.

Thoughts on in tree line advancement (no spikes) captain hook?

I bought an extendable pole thingie from WesSpur about four years ago called a SideKick. I don't think they are available anymore but I love the gadget. It is about 18 inches long or so and just hangs on the back of the saddle until I need it. Then it extends with a few twists to 9 feet long...

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

A scuba diving neighbor of mine has the cutest little aluminium emergency scuba bail-out bottle, not much bigger than a bicycle water bottle and holding 2000 psi. Could be strapped right to the air launcher!

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

A competition would be fun. Large cash prizes for range, accuracy, and novelty of design!

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

You have a good point, that in my loop reservoir there are elbows which the air has to navigate. It might not be such a factor in this case since the exit is restricted down to 1 inch at the valve anyway, and also there are two arms of the loop towards the valve so that total area leading into...

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

I would think that shooting straight up is the hardest scenario for velocity and range. This is when the bag would be heaviest against the propelling force in the barrel. Is that what you meant, the geometry of the shot? Shooting on a slant, part of the weight of the bag is taken by the wall...

    Staying organized around the saddle...

Good advice from A.J., as always. And I would add a knot on the rope tail, for safety, if there is ever any appreciable distance from the ground to the end. Escaping some wasps or whatever, it might be easy to forget and rappel off the tail.

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

Finished a second version last night for increased range. For hiking with it, I did not want to do anything that involved longer barrels or air reservoir, however, so I doubled the reservoir section into a loop to increase volume. Barrel is just slightly longer than the previous cannon. With...

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

Here is the little tire inflator. It cost about $15. and uses the threaded type cartridges. I get three 60 psi shots from one 16g cartridge. They are a dollar or two apiece, depending on how many you get at once and where. I get them 20 at a time on eBay. I can reinflate my mountain bike...

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

Just finished my air launcher with 24" barrel and same 24" x 1-1/2" PVC for air reservoir end, and Rainbird CP100 sprinkler valve for trigger. Wow, with 60 psi, it tosses a 12 oz. bag almost out of sight. Easily over 100 feet and very accurate. Even with big diameter throwline on it, I...

    Staying organized around the saddle...

I was confused sometimes in the same way my first couple years of rec climbing. But the more you do it, the more everything falls into place. The position on the saddle will sort of arrange itself over time as you get used to putting stuff back again and again, and getting comfortable with...

    A Thanksgiving Conversation...

We have eagles here and I was up about 70 feet in a big tree here once, where the very top of the tree was dead, the kind of perch these birds like. A big one landed up there above, ten or twelve feet from me. Probably had a six foot wing span. He did not seem afraid of me at all, like he...

    A Thanksgiving Conversation...

Well, you more or less nailed it. I took it up in retirement after watching our local arborist at work in my neighborhood about four years ago. It looked like he was having too much fun even if it was his work. He invited me to try it and I had such a great time that I immediately drove up to...

In search of trees for recreational climbing...and other ponderings and questions.

Same law here in WA State. No liability for landowners as long as they don't charge anything other than $20 per day for vehicle parking; and they are required to have warning signage and/or fencing for any hazards such as an open well, deep pits hidden by vegetation, etc.

    Compact Bulldog Bone

I just got a second BDB in a trade last week and climbed with both today. A couple of short traverses and some moving around using both ends of my climbing rope. It was great having a second one!

    Compact Bulldog Bone

It is very dangerous to live close enough to visit WesSpur in person. One's VISA can take quite a beating. You would not regret buying a Bone however. It is an amazing device.

I will buy three as well, when you get a batch ready to go out. Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving. Cheers, Stewart

    Camp Gyro on rope bridge

I would buy a larger version. The Gyro just looks too small to me. I know it is rated, but it just bugs me how small it is, compared to my biners hooked to it. It just seems like it should be larger and beefier. Maybe if I was lighter myself! LOL.

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

Thanks, Winchman. I have my valve apart now and I see what you are talking about. As to air pumps, have you guys seen the rechargeable electric bicycle pumps on eBay? There is a 150 psi version that is cylinder shaped and could be strapped right to the air launcher. I think they probably...
