I have turned some big bowls from green wood, but burls always crack if you don’t dry them first. My advice would be to dry the whole burl in one piece with the bark on. Forget about it for a few years. Then, if there are deep cracks, fill them with a mixture of bark from the same tree and epoxy...
It’s a very well written article. The first climber who inspired me, was in his 70’s. I believe he still helped lower income folks with their trees up into his 80’s!
By the time I arrived the locust had already descended and taken care of all the trees on the roads. Folks didn’t want trees cut off their houses until after the insurance adjusters had a chance to see it first. There was a lot of chaos, especially amongst the town leadership. I was able to get...
I’m thinking about making a trip up to the Burnsville area with water, food and essentials. Turns out one of my neighbor’s friends is an experienced EMT. I’m thinking he might be the perfect partner for the trip.
We only had a couple of trees go down in our yard because all the weak trees either snapped or blew over in the last storm. The highway was a real mess! There was a cutting crew that had a large white oak fall right on the tailgate of one truck trapping them in between a real mess. The crews...
Well, there’s some great suggestions…
The only thing I’d add would be to drink a couple of Red Bulls (they give you “wings”) and listen to the sound track from the movie Jaws. You’ll be climbing like a pro in no time.
The hammer head part is very rounded with no texturing. You can drive a wedge in for a felling cut, but it sometimes glances off. You won’t regret buying it though. It is very useful for the stump cut.
That little blue Estwing is called the “Fireside Friend”. It’s useful to have on hand, but not the best wedge driver as the head is rounded and has no grip. It shines with stump cuts as it chops the dirty bark off easily and taps wedges for the final cut.
I was attacked by a huge Horsefly recently and in my efforts to swat it I stuck my silky in my palm. Not sure that I should be allowed to handle sharp objects… :endesacuerdo:
I don’t have any more Hemlock seed, but I still have a few seedlings that made it through the Summer and somehow managed to avoid getting eaten by the slugs. Hopefully they will push out new growth in the spring. Right now they are still tiny.
