Need Your Opinions on This Tree Please

I know, I know.... "I'm not dead, yet!" Yes it is. It just hasn't realized how sick it is.

Need Your Opinions on This Tree Please

Yeah, and the same goes for Acer griseum, too. "But... but... Paperbark Maple is so pretty!" Yes, but this is Nebraska, it won't stay that way. This one didn't make it past 3 years.

    Covid Close To You

The wife works at an assisted living home... they have 28 cases of Delta variant all in people who were vaccinated (Pfizer vaccine). Although they all tested positive, none of them are seriously ill, so the vaccines seem to do a very good job of mitigating the effects of the virus. All of these...

It's so refreshing to see GDD (base 50) used on something other than corn and soybeans.

    Heat exhaustion or heat stroke?

Mine runs on the low side, too... it has for all my life. However, I'm extremely prone to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, so I have to be VERY careful if it's above 90*F outside. I also have to start acclimating myself to the heat slowly in the spring... I think getting used to the heat slowly...

Cologne that smells like pine trees

You guys keep working on that formula. Soon, you'll be famous for the lawsuits from people with bark beetle infestations, Dothistroma blight, and a snoot full of owl shit.

From Tree Climbing to Vertical Caving

My wife often descends into caves, but she will usually just fly back up to the top and hang from the ceiling by her feet.

Will a larger rigging ring always make more friction?

It seems to me that the correct ring size is the one that offers the best bend radius to the rope, and that the amount of friction offered to the rope is only a minor consideration. I say this because worrying about the friction of the ring would indicate that no control friction is being used...

    Complex cat-in-a-tree rescue

I think that's just all cats. There are tons of YouTube videos documenting this.

That kind of worries me, @misfit... but I see we're thinking along the same lines. Wait. That worries me even more.

    dusted off an old rope

My first pet snake was a black rat snake. He was badass. Strangled and ate every furry little critter I could catch and throw in his cage. The kind of gruesome entertainment only a sociopathic 9-year-old can truly appreciate.

    Complex cat-in-a-tree rescue

I inherited a couple of outdoor cats that scamper up and down trees like squirrels. In fact, that's usually what they're after. I can't help but think that indoor cats don't learn these skills early enough, or something. Mine have their own "cat house" built into the garage (which they defend...

Proper Care & Maintenance for an Apple Tree

The hard part for customers with a couple of fruit trees in their yard is explaining to them that you can have nice fruit or you can have a tree that still looks good in the winter. You can't have both, unless you like climbing trees or tall ladders and fighting with the bees and raccoons for...

Proper Care & Maintenance for an Apple Tree

Pruning fruit trees is like woodworking... you can build a table using all manner of joinery and techniques. Mortise and tenon, sliding dovetails, halflap and bridle joint, and all kinds of stuff that takes all day. It all works, some techniques work better for structural integrity, some are...

    Rooster next door

One of the locals told me they have cock fights down at the Legionaire Club every weekend. I was aghast. "You know," I said, "that it's against the law to force chickens to fight for gambling purposes, right?" He replied, "What chickens?"
