Ok, this one did not have lobed leaves so i am thinking it is Davidii. I'll look up A. tegmentosum, that sounds like a cool tree. We don't see many of the snakebark maples out here so i have not seen enough to really be good with them yet.
It is one of the snake barks. I am not really sure the difference between davidii and pennsylvanica. I just don't see them enough.

Here it is. I'm not 100% on which species it is, i have it narrowed down to two or three, but we don't seen enough of these trees out here. i'm sure you east of the mississippiers will find this one easy.
Looks like the beginning of an oak apple. There are lots of wasps that cause funny growth like that in oaks. Usually not an issue.

unrelated, but please come up to the PDX TCC on June 17th. It is at Laurelhurst park this year! There will be a couple of female arborists up there that you could ask what pants they wear. I've heard good things about the red ants pants if your into a more carhart style pant.
