Stihl MS310 stops cutting for "no reason"

These replies are appreciated. I did file. There were 2 burs on each side of the tip, presumably from kick. I also checked chain wiggle. It rocks back and forth. (side to side, whatever makes sense.) Because that movement might be on the sloppy side, I'm gonna go w/a new bar and new chain. As...

Stihl MS310 stops cutting for "no reason"

I have a Stihl MS310 with a 20" bar. The bar is newer than the saw, replaced with an Oregon bar around 2011. I swapped in a new bar precisely because I am having this problem. My chains are SHARP, they throw spaghetti and huge chunks at the beginning of the cut. Just the other day I was bucking...

Tales of the Tail - eye-to-eye prusiks - Careful!

i appreciate all the education insofar as mechanical ascenders. I'm still a tie-on fric hitch, doubled-rope person but i am very interested in new technology, always. not being able to remove or re-attach a friction device aloft would, for me, take some getting used to. plus i work for myself...

Tales of the Tail - eye-to-eye prusiks - Careful!

As a sometime tree worker and avid rec climber, I've had unexpected results with certain types and sizes of I-2-I prusiks. Unexpected literally meaning, HOLY JESUS MY SCHWABISCH WAS HOLDING FAST THE FIRST 30' UP, WHY'S IT SLIPPING NOW?!?!?!?!? Ya know, no big deal when you've been climbing a...

    New Gear Coming From DMM

DMM Wales, such great stuff. Being a gear slut is costly, but because I purchased "more than I needed" of those single action carabiners they made back in the day (gold gate and red gate, single twist to open) I am still able to innovate new gear configurations with them. And they're SO THICK...

    Long duration in spikes

I just did a comparo between the price of Buck Super Wraps ($180) and Opsal "Caddy" pads ($75) on WesSpur. Should have gone for the Caddy pads back when... ! Big Buck Velcro Super Wraps are more than double the cost and, as I can attest, no miracle cure.I guess next purchase related to making my...

    Exercises to supplement strength

Exercises and stretches to supplement strength I will be 55 this year. Just thought I'd pass this along - I haven't really been doing anything over the past year or so to supplement the workout I get in trees. I moved out of my house, so no more woodstove, which means no more swinging a maul...

Personal setup for recreational / work climbing

Quick FYI, I swapped out the 8mm Ultratech and am now using 10mm Ocean ('s Eleven) for my positioning lanyard. Much better! That 8mm was just too grabby-very hard to shuttle quickly when tending slack. And the 8mm Ultra is now subbed-in for that tired old Bee Line on the small, spare lanyard...

    Making the switch.....HAAS?

Here is a review of my lanyard/RopeGrab device from the website bartlettman dot com... I guess this particular type of cam friction device req's a bit of personal acclimation. I also have the problem where the 'biner twists and loads off-axis. My plan is to sub in the Rope Grab on my normal...

    Making the switch.....HAAS?

This is another timely post, thanks guys and girls. I have a question about the friction devices used with SRT and how to unload them while under tension. I recently bought a wire core flipline with a friction CAM apparatus. I'm pretty positive it's a black Rope Grab. (screen capture attached...

    Long duration in spikes

Thanks for that! You look pretty comfy on those. You are funny with the Cadillac pads. I had spent years blogging on Eric Frei's (sp?) tree forums, and watched his video comparing Gecko's to his old fave gaffs w/Caddy pads. I think I bought the Buckingham super wraps because I wasn't sure if...

    Cleaning your pulleys with string

Just a FYI, of course there comes a time when you have to disassemble your gear and really get the gunk out. I have amassed a LOT of those little CMI micro pulleys over the 14-odd years I've been climbing, and when I don't have time to undo the nut, clean the axle shaft, soft-sand the inner...

    Wanted: Trained Throwbag Dog

Last coupla trees I took down, I was just thinking to myself "This Big Shot was one of the BEST xx dollars I ever spent!" No kidding, these were high (75'-80' ?), obscured crotches w/ all kinds of stuff growing... vines, suckers, other trees. I chinced and got the cheapest Big Shot about 5 years...

    Long duration in spikes

I'm so glad I stopped in to read these posts. I kind of hate gaffs, and I'm sure that has something to do w/the fact that I've owned Buckingham spikes for about 10 years but I only got a wire flipline last year! Hugging the tree to advance a limp lanyard is surely lame. But back to the topic -...

Traditional to eye and eye split tail

As was stated, there are totally separate techniques for ascent including single and doubled rope systems. Many pro tree workers are moving toward SRT as their go-to. Does that mean a new climber at the present time should perhaps learn single first, and bag the double until much later? For me...
